Hi - currently I share a cable modem via a router on a home LAN with at
least one other user. The other user insists on using a file sharing program
that has no bandwidth limiting and frankly its a pain in the ass. Even when
its not downloading much it can still bugger up the connection for other
people and causes me high ping spikes if Im playing online games. I need
either software that limits the bandwidth each machine will grab or a router
that will apportion bandwidth equally. Im in the UK btw.
Please can anyone help.

The entry level Linksys BEFSR41 has that. It's called QOS (Quality Of
Service). You can configure priorities based on MAC address of the host
and also based on the ports used. If this NAT router has it then I
would suspect the later models have it, too, as well as other NAT
yrouters. If you have the time, you might want to go to each NAT router
maker's web site to read their online manuals to see which ones have the
features you want (after checking online stores to see which are within
your price range).

You could try looking at Draytek Vigor. I've used these for a couple of
years and apart from the occassional need to reboot it (once a month or so)
it's been great. http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/router_compare.shtml
suggests there is bandwidth throttling which is I think what you're after.

This isn't really what you want, as I think it will need to be installed on
your friend's machine, but I thought I'd just mention it anyway...

One easy thing you could do with most routers (instead of
replacing the current router) is block ports- leave only a
couple open for other/P2P use. However, these are more of a
social problem than a computing problem, you need discuss
the network usage with the other user, explaining that they
cannot usurp the network unfairly regardless of what they're
doing.

thanks to all for the help - I've downloaded a trial version of bandwidth
controlling program called BWMeter and its working quite well I think.
I did try explaining the problem to the other user but he's not the kind of
person
to think of others or ask before switching Emule on.

Then retaliate by not being the kind of person to think of others or ask
before switching off their access through the router. That is, shut the
twit off the router when you want to use it. The twit will quickly
realize that his own lack of responsibility can be used against him/her
(i.e., return their "courtesy" with like "courtesy").
