I see a need for FrontPage to have GLOBAL insert feature in addition to the
LOCAL one they already have in Web Component Insert Page.

This woull allow one to author ONE copy of an insert and have it available
to all subwbes without having to COPY/ PASTE to each subweb.

The concpet is similar to some programming languages that allow LOCAL and
GLOBAL defined variables.

I first utilized GLOBAL inserts between documents in a WordPerfect macro
back a few years ago.

This GLOBAL insert feature would save me the two additinal stpes of 1)
having to use COPY/PASTE to place my new website-wide navigations bar code
in thirty some sub-webs and 2) publishing each subweb. And allow me the
piece of mind knowing that that ONE version will indead be applied to all
( presently I sometimes miss one )

Does anyone else see this need?

FP is a web based management, and when working with subwebs, each subweb is
a completely independent of the web it is contained under, allowing the
subweb to be published a completely independent root web or as another
subweb under another FP root or subweb. Because of the above ability, FP has
no way to managing links or navigation structure between a root web and
subweb or nested subwebs.

Also FP can not manage any URL that is a absolute URL.

I am speaking to a NEED, not to an existing product feature. I am asking
others if they, TOO have such a need.

FP is a good piece of software.

I am of the opinion that it would be an even better, more useful price of
software if it took the process of Includes past the LOCAL only mode and
went to a LOCAL and GLOBAL mode for a web that has many subweb parts.

I see the possibility for a new feature for a future version of FrontPage in
which that each subweb can still be an independant entity, with its own
security, but allowing the inclusion of approved GLOBAL access to the
web-wide GLOBAL facilities as defined within that version of a future
FrontPage.

Thanks.

I was speaking in term of how FP is designed to work, and that it is and has
been web based, and subwebs are consider individual webs. Yes it may be
possible for MS to changes this as long as the subweb is within the same
domain/IP, but how do you handle a subweb that is publish to a different
server?

We currently have the ability to use includes across subwebs, by using SSI,
however SSI can not be used across domains/IPs.

Not totally correct.

If you have a local web server, you would design and develop your site
directly on the server via http://localhost etc. then once you done, you
would publish to the remote server. You do not need to have a web server
with all of the functions and applications that a web host would have
installed, unless you want to actual test specific server-side functions
locally.

Example, I run a Windows 2000 server locally, because I mainly develop ASP
based web sites, I use a ASP File Upload components, and a ASP Mail
component, however I do have them on my local server, when I need to test
them I publish my current content to the server, then work directly on the
server, then I publish the final version back to my local server for backup.

I use both FP Includes as well as ASP SSI includes. I use FP includes where
I want FP to maintain the navigation links and ASP Includes mainly to
include ASP coding in a all or a group of pages.

In order for FP to handle Global Includes, it would have to be totally
re-written, as the Shared Border component, navigation component, spelling
component, search and replace component all would need to be changed to not
be web base.

Basically you see the same thing when working with Word Document where you
have included an Excel Spreadsheet as active, as an example, as long as the
two documents always remain in the same location as when you included the
spreadsheet, then you do not have any problems, but if you move the Word
document or spreadsheet to another location or upload to the web, the link
between the two is then broken.
