Okay, this is a question for the registry geeks. And yes, it is
freeware-related.

The short version is that I'm trying to change the default icon for
Internet Shortcut files (URL files) from Mozilla to Netscape. I've tried
doing this through Explorer, but it won't allow me to change the icon.

I next tried the freeware program 'File Association', which DOES allow
you to change the icon. It appears that the change took, yet the icon is
still the Mozilla icon on my desktop. All new shortcuts I make still
show the Mozilla icon.

I'll walk you through what I've done. Hopefully one of you can figure
out what I am doing wrong.

USING WINDOWS EXPLORER

1. Go to Folder Options/File Types. Look up Internet Shortcut. It
tells you the extension is 'URL' and it opens with 'RUNDLL32'. IOW it
doesn't open with a normal program.

2. Hit Edit, and you'll find that 'Change Icon' is grayed out.

USING FILE ASSOCIATION (A FREEWARE PROGRAM)

1. Under 'Extensions', go to URL.

2. Hit Edit.

3. Change Default Icon to: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Program
\netscape.exe

4. Return to main interface and hit Display to see if it took. This is
the output (see line 4):

Extension: .URL
File Class: InternetShortcut
Description: Internet Shortcut
Default icon is "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Program\netscape.exe,0"
Default command verb is "open"
"open" command=rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %1
"print" command=C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCAPE\PROGRAM\NETSCAPE.EXE /print("%
1")
"print" ddeexec=[print("%1")]
application=NSShell
topic=
"printto" command=C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCAPE\PROGRAM\NETSCAPE.EXE /printto
("%1","%2","%3","%4")
"printto" ddeexec=[printto("%1","%2","%3","%4")]
application=NSShell
topic=

5. It appears that the change did 'take'. It shows that the default
icon is now supposedly the Netscape icon.

6. So why hasn't the icon changed on my desktop? I've tried rebooting,
repairing my icons via TweakUI, and I'm still stuck with the Mozilla
icon.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Never mind. Someone came up with an answer. Very cool:
