Hi,

I am looking for recommendations on solutions that will help provide system
availability. here is the scenario:

I have 8 servers. Five of them are running 1 application each. The remaining
3 servers are spares. All of the applications need to be portable to if one
server fails the services on one of the spares will start automatically.
This will include assigning a virtual IP and Alias name and may include
running a script or two upon failure.

I understand I can use Clustering for this but I do not think it is a good
solution for me as these are low-end servers with no external drivers etc.
Also, I want to be able to run either Win2K Server Standard or Pro versions
to save some money.

So far I have come across one application that can do this, Legato AAM. I
have heard mixed reviews about this app. Any other recommendations?

Thank you.

You know most of these have 30-day trials. I used one long ago when
Microsoft was promoting Wolf Pack but I cannot remember the name of it. It
was designed to first work on Netware when Novell was promoting SFT III. It
is the only one I am familiar with but the name escapes me. It worked quite
well and one would assume the technology has greatly improved. It might be
beneficial to visit some of these and read their marketing. Generally they
will list their 'benefits' against their biggest competitors and you may
also be able to get an independent evaluation from a 3rd party. Opinions
are only going to provide you with what someone has used and will not be a
true comparison as I am sure you are aware. These are not low-dollar items
so that may not be the best determining factor for your potential purchasing
decision.

Ah, Vinca. That was it. Here is a document I found that discusses it but
you're talking some time ago so not sure if this is really relevant:

Thank you Roland.

Vinca (now known as Co-Standby by Legato, Also AAM from the same) is
something I am trying to get rid of :-)
