I got a free fan with my 2800 Athlon XP chip and their is a grey square in
the copper part of the cooler. Is this there to help cool my chip? Should I
leave that on and use that, or should I take that off and use some silver
thermal compound I've got?

Regards,

Yes, you need a chip cooling fan. If there is one already installed,
leave it alone. If you must change it, I suggest ordinary white,
non-conducting thermal compound. I lost a chip because the silver stuff
trickled down and shorted out some pins. Of course, I had used two
drops rather than one.

Yes, but should I leave the little gray square on the copper part of this
brand new fan, or should I remove that and add some Antec Formula 5 Silver
Compound I've got? Which would work best?

Us ethe gray square on the bottom of the HSF and don't add the thermal
compound. It will serve the same purpose and according to AMD last longer.

If you aren't into overclocking, then leave the pad. It'll work fine.Make sure
you remove any plastic film covering the pad first(if there is a film). Don't
worry too much about what type of paste you use if you do remove the pad. There
really isn't that much of a difference.
