When I build or upgrade systems for ppl I either use Plextor (if they
have deep pockets) or Lite On (if they are cheap) for cd writers.

Got a guy that wants me to do his upgrade tommorow, but he did'nt
order the liteon I told him to get from newegg. He wants instant
gratification at what a local store can provide.

The only thing I can find locally is memorex and i/omagic. The sales
guys said the i/omagic was made by lite-on. Can anyone confirm this, I
don't exactly trust most sales guys.

Are these ok drives?

Thanks!

I don't know...but if the person did not order the drive you specifically
told
him to order...you should insist that you will take no responsibility for
one of the local substitutes. The only consolation being...if you purchase
it from a reputable dealer...they should give you a full refund if it does
not work.

BTW: I build a lot of machines for people who never bother to take my
advice...and I've found that even the cheapest CD burners at least work...
however the software that comes with them is often defective and I have to
go with Nero. Trying to save a few $$$$ typically turns out to be the more
expensive route!

there's bog all difference these days, just get a generic cheap one in a
colour that matches the case.

I usually look for a drive that comes with Nero and forget about the brand
of the drive if they are on sale.

There has to be a Best Buy near you. The Best Buys near me carry Plextor
drives right on the shelf.
