I an reviving an old PC with a QDI with an intel 430tx chipset. the MB
doesn't have a PS/2 mouse port on it but it does have the pins to plug on
into. My question is, where can I buy a PS/2 header (is that the proper
description?) for this board and how do I specify what I need?

thanks,

rich c

For the mouse, you'll need a "PS/2 to serial" adapter. For the
keyboard, you'll need a "PS/2 to AT" adapter.

For the mouse, you'll need a "PS/2 to serial" adapter.

If the mouse is serial compatible, and if giving up one serial port is
acceptable.
Otherwise, since PS/2 is available for the mouse, one might as well
find the PS/2 backplate.

The header is that set of pins on the motherboard, and what you need
is the adapter cable, which may be called a "riser," something like
this:

mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce/mcm/en_US/support/catalog/productDetail.jsp?id=83-7792

But it seems that the one pictured has the wrong kind of socket for
the motherboard side, one with 2 rows of 4 pins (Soyo style), not 1
row of 5-6 pins. You could buy a replacement socket body for it and
transfer the pins to it, but you'd most likely have to then use an ohm
meter to verify the proper connections.

www.pricewatch.com lists of these PS/2 mouse adapter cables, but you
may be able to get one cheaply or free from an independent computer
shop since I'm sure they keep some miscellaneous parts like this for
repairs. Also try electronics parts supplies that cater to hobbyists
or that carry surplus items.

You don't need a PS/2 to serial converter or any other converter.

What are the connections on the motherboard? If you don't have a
manual, you may be able to find a PDF version on the internet.
I recently revived an Asus TXP4 MB (baby AT). It has an 18-pin
connector which takes a PS2/USB/IrDA Module Connector. This has 2 USB
ports and some sort of infrared connector as well as the PS2. I
couldn't find the Asus version anywhere, but got some other make (PC
Chips I think). It's called an "ATX Form Card" and although I haven't
tried to get the USB working (need a BIOS update), the PS2 mouse port
works fine. It only cost 9 quid. I expect it's cheaper in the US.
