I have a lot of scanned images saved as png files and was wondering if there
is any good program for adding text comments and descriptions to them. It
would also probably allow you to search them for specific photos such as
names of people.

I don't know about searching the text, but I think Irfanview
does everything else.

Two good catalogers here (captions, keywords, filters etc.):

FotoAlbum, MyAlbum

I've tried both, prefer FotoAlbum, YMMV. :)

Had a look at both of these programs and they store the text external to the
photos/files.

I need to have the text embedded into the file in a similar manner to EXIF
information on jpg photos.

Irfanview allows you to add some embedded information, for jpg photos but
not png files, however irfanview doesn't display this information as you
look at you photos.

It is important that this embedded information is part of the file, so that
if you send it to someone else then they can also see the embedded info with
out having to download the programs that you mentioned below.

In other words, applications should be able to read this information as part
of the file format.

Also, it appears that the myalbum link on the pricelessware site doesn't
work :(

I don't know of a program that can do that.

but . . .

It is very easy to make a FotoAlbum CD that has all of the data you have
added and a program to display it - the recipient has the same viewing
options you have - filters work etc. and they do not have to download or
install anything.
Also, it appears that the myalbum link on the pricelessware site doesn't

Didn't work here either - may be temporary though - you might try again
tomorrow.

I don't know of specific programs, but if text annotations are embedded
as plain text (not always the case - depends on the specific compression
flag used) a Q&D way to locate images by text content might be to use
Find *.png
Containing Text: "your text in this box"

Hardly pretty, but most people would have this capability on their box.
