Hi today i was just using my pc(which i had somone build for me) as normal then it crashed and loaded up some default setting which had gone back months and months ago and all my work documents, programs, music etc had gone is there anyway to reverse this. Ive gone to system restore but thats no help as it wont go back any previous dates. Maybe if i access the bios maybe i can do this. please need your help it had so much work on it!

Thanks

The BIOS will not affect the system restore.

You will have to try and access the restore function again and go forward to more recent point. If your system wont go far enough forward due to not having a recent restore point then sorry not sure what your gonna do.

Try booting up in Safe mode.. Tap the F8 Key as your system is booting untill you get new options appear on the screen. Choose safe mode.

However if you have restored your pc to a older restore point then it wont work it will only give you the programs and information that has been recently restored upto tht point. This safe mode option should have been done before you went to restore

ive tried safe mode with no luck ive system restored to the only point i could which is the same day ive had all the problems so basically ive lost everything?

A "restore point" won't save your data nor programs ... a restore point will help with a driver or install error/problem.

'Tis why we use a back-up/imaging programs or at least copy our data to a CD or DVD

Once "all hell" has broken loose the average home user is stuffed.

Who's PC are you talking to us on?

If you know how, take your HD out and connect it as a slave to a good PC and see if you can retrieve your data ... if you cannot do that, try a Linux "Live CD" and see if you can get your data off that way.

That was my next suggestion

I just had another thought ... Do you have a 'real' XP CD ... if so, try booting with your Windows XP CD, it will load it's environment and drivers and stuff.

On the first screen of choices, press R to start the Recovery Console. It may prompt you to choose a Windows installation (if there's only one, type 1 and hit enter). You will then be prompted for the Administrator password, which should be blank by default (just hit enter). Note: it probably will not prompt for this stuff because the HD may be buggered. It may just go right to the recovery console.

When you get logged on, type... chkdsk c: ... and you may see it correcting errors. When it's finished, type exit to leave the recovery console.

If that don't work ... I forgo any charges. ;)

Cheers for the advice ill try that but i guess its over for that pc theres just way to many problems with custom pc's so im going straight to pc world

Well now it refuses to do anything and just constantly restarts so ive given up ive tried using my xp disc but still nothing

You dont have another machine you can put it into and save the docs and other items you want?

That is if you know how to?
