I'm looking for a replacement for notepad that can remove carriage
returns. All the ones I checked out on the shareware sites have many
wonderful features, but none mention this particular need that I have.
Thanks.

Sounds like you need "search and replace" mode.
NoteTab is a free text/html editor with astounding features for the price.
I think you can search for a non-printing character. [ strip CRLF's ] with
it.
link : www.notetab.com. Is it possible that you are looking for "word wrap".
notepad and wordpad have that.

From NoteTab [lite] help section on find & replace:
"Tip: You can quickly copy text from the Find field to the Replace field by
double-clicking on the "Replace with" label.

The Find and Replace dialog boxes accept tokens to represent special
characters:

^T = Tab ($09)
^B = Page break ($0C)
^P = Paragraph (carriage-return/line-feed pair)

The following are not available in NoteTab Pro:

^C = Carriage-return ($0D)
^L = Line-feed ($0A) "

I love my NoteTab lite. [great for html editing also]

Try Notetab free from www.notetab.ch, and use its Replace function.

If you enter "^P" (without quotes) in the search field, and leave the
replace field empty, or replace with a blank space, it should do the
job.

Try Metapad. Press F9, and all the hard returns disappear.

Tried notetab... used find replace. caretP with blank space. Nothing
happened. Back to the drawing board. Maybe what I need is a macro for
Word 2K instead.

I should have tried it first myself. Blank space as a replacement
doesn't word, but a Tabulator does, so try that one.

There might be yet another possibility in Note Tab:
Mark text, go to Menu, Modify - Lines - Join Lines (Ctrl-J)

That doesn't kill several paragraphs in a row, to keep portions of text
apart from each other. NotePad is extremely flexible, I still don't
understand all of its features.

Try Metapad. It works.

Try this method in NoteTab:

Highlight the relevant text.
Go to Modify > Lines > Join Lines
(You may also need to go to Documents > Properties and check/uncheck "Scroll
past end of line")
