Need new setup CD for SP2 when mother board upgrade?

I have a computer on which I have been running XP Pro for many years. The
system was upgraded from a previous windows using the original XP Pro Upgrade
CD. The installed system was upgraded using Internet download patches to SP2
long ago. I have installed a newer mother board in the machine and the
installed windows will not boot because of lack of drivers for the new MB.
When I attmept to re-install from the original CD, booting setup from the
original CD also fails because it is pre-SP2 (or SP1) and will not start with
the newer chipset on the MB.

I downloaded the SP2 setup from MS and created boot floppies. That version
will run setup to the point of needing the CD. It will not accept my CD
because it is not a SP2 CD.

So, my question is since I have a valid license for XP Pro on this machine,
is there any way I can get a SP2 setup CD that will install on the new MB?
Or do I have to purchase a complete new copy of XP Pro and spend even more $
on this computer?

I don't agree. The hardware is fine. I have installed a copy of Server 2003
by booting from its setup CD and the system is running fine with it
(different HDD) but I would rather have XP Pro back on the machine. The SP2
setup includes newer hardware drivers for current day MBs than the original
setup CD. The SP2 setup I booted from floppies got much further in the
process than the setup booted from the original CD. The original setup give
a stop 0x7E on pci.sys after loading the drivers and attempting to start
windows.

The object here is to slipstream SP2 into your original XP Pro CD
here is the website where you can download...not install...SP2
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

and here is a website that will explain how to Slipstream that download into
your original and create a newer XP Pro SP2 CD
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

Once you have that created you can then use this CD to start a Repair
Installation which should correct your drivers.....and you should be able to
start the PC.
After which you will need to load the mobo drivers that came with the mobo.

Is the XP CD not booting at all, or booting and throwing an error? If you
cannot even boot from the CD my original answer is correct, if you can boot
from the CD but get an error after that, that is an entirely different
story.

The op stated booting setup from winxp cd fails because it is pre sp.
This err will occur if the installed o/s is sp & the cd is pre sp - occurs
during a repair installation

That sounds like something that might work. I check into it. Thanks for the
information Peter.

Not correct at all. It depends entirely on what the OP meant by "not booting
from the CD", nothing on the hard drive can prevent booting from a CD as the
CD boot happens well before the OS on the drive comes in to play.
He may be assuming that it is a service pack issue when it may not be. When
he answers my question about what exactly is happening then we will know.

Yes, David thanks for the suggestions. It does boot fine but after loading
the drivers and attempting to start windows it generated a hard stop. Your
suggestion is certainly valid if it would not boot from the CD. Thanksl.

Chuck A.

Exactly. But, it occurs during any type of attempt before it ever asks what
you want to do so it is not restricted to just repair.

Ok, so you can actually boot from the CD, it's crashing after that. A number
of things can cause that, bad motherboard, bad RAM, bad CD, bad hard drive,
the list goes on. Every time I have had that problem it has been a hardware
issue of some sort, but it would not be a bad idea to try an SP2
slipstreamed CD to start the troubleshooting process, especially since
Server 2003 worked fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions on this problem. Peter's advice and pointers
to the slipstream process did the trick. I was able to create a SP2 setup
boot CD using slipstream and get my system drivers updated enough that I
could install the new mobo drivers. All is working now and life is again
good!

every once in awhile I get one right :)
