DeLux!

I have been trying to get my old faithful Artec AT3 scanner to run on
the new P4 comp with not too much success... I hate to think that I
must buy a new scanner, but it may be the time... {sigh} even though
the scanner itself has run well for a long time - it's just the comp..

Anyway, what I like about the AT3 is that it is good sized, has an
articulated top (good for scanning books, and thick things, and that
the software that came with it had ocr, which was VERY HANDY!

One other thing I would like a new scanner to do is set up for
scanning slides. I have a number of old family picts in slide format
that I would like to get printed out.

The main trouble setting up the old AT3 has been the SCSI card setup,
so I think the new one should be a USB connection.

Any recommendations?

Any chance you could get a SCSI card for the new computer? I'm
guessing that your old scanner came with a cheapo ISA-bus SCSI
card, and your new machine only has PCI slots. It seems a shame
to throw away a perfectly good scanner that you're happy with,
just because fashion dictates that you switch to something that
probably won't serve you nearly as well.
Any recommendations?

Only in the negative sense. Stay away from the HP ScanJet 3970.
I made the mistake of thinking that all scanners were more or less
equal (resolution aside), and picked up this flatbed unit, which has
an attachment for slides and negative strips. But the software that
comes with it is HORRIBLE - it's almost impossible to find the settings
to make it do what you want, and if you find them once you'll never
find them again. VueScan doesn't recognize this unit, so that option
is out. I was on the verge of hurling the damned thing through the
window - which strange, since I'm the computer geek in the family,
and my wife is usually the one who gets like this.

What is not working? Try be more spacific.
Is it that your SCSI card does not fit your new computer? Get a new
card.
Is it that your software is not working with Windows XP? Try
downloading driver V.4.02B for Windows 2000. When you go to install
the program do it through your windows explorer. Right click on the
file and select properties, compatability. Select Windows 2000.
Follow through with the install. Now try run the program. Does that
work. If not try find the program file in your Program directory and
make that compatible with Windows 2000 just like I showed you.

Let us know if this works. Remember there are always more then one
way to skin the cat.

I just found this at http://www.artecusa.com/scsi-scanner-driver.html

Important note for SCSI scanner users: If your original SCSI card is
DTC ISA interface, it doesn't support Window 2000 operating system.
You must purchase a new standard SCSI II card which supports Window
2000. Please be aware that our scanners are not compatible with Ultra
Wide SCSI cards

You can presume the same if you are running Windows XP. SCSI cards
can be expensive. If you don't find one in the store at a price you
like try EBAY.
You can also download the latest drivers from this web page.

Good luck. Let us know how things work out.

Thank you Charlie and David for replying.

Yes, the old card did not work in the new comp. The new comp has a
card that I THOUGHT was scsi, from looking at the sys. info, but it
has three rows of pins, not two. So now I don't know just what that
card is for.

Anyway, given the correct card, I can probably plug it in, but I'm not
enough of a techie to know the correct card when I see it. And David,
You are a better site-searcher than me. I was at the Artec site, and
even wrote them with no response, so I appreciate your help.

I dropped a bit on $$ on this new machine, wanted to be able to use it
for quite some time, so if I HAVE to pay some for a new scsi, if not
TOO much, Oh, Well...

I believe I have one pci slot free, or could remove the mystery card
if necessary to make room for the new scsi, but the "New standard scsi
II" -- Is that what I search ebay for? are there other keywords to
use? I'm at the point where I want it to work, once and for all if I
try this...

eBay ? ? ? ? ?

Try your local computer store ... quicker and less hassle. What you probably want is

Adaptec
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/prodindextech.html?sess=no&language=English+US

You probably want the 2930 Ultra, it's one of the most common SCSI cards being used these
days ... *list* cost is $99.99
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodk
ey=AHA-2930CU&cat=%2fTechnology%2fSCSI%2fSCSI+Connections+for+PCs

And Fry's 'outpost.com' has it for $59.99
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/2506311

You should be able to come pretty close to that price at any local vendor.

Disclaimer:
No "responsibility" assumed by making this posting. I am not connected in any way with
either of the two vendors mentioned above ... just a satisfied user.

YMMV

I will presume you are running windows xp.
Try this.
[START][CONTROLE PANEL][PERFORMANCE AND
MAINTENANCE][SYSTEM][HARDWARE][DEVICE MANAGER]
Without expanding any of the options there do you see "SCSI" listed?
If no then you don't have a SCSI card. If yes then you probably do
have a SCSI card.

SCSI cards come is two-port configurement. One that looks like an old
Serial Port and one that are narrow without screws. Both are two rows
of female pins on the card. The card should also have the universal
SCSI symbol on it (kind of diamond with a tail). If you saw SCSI in
your [DEVICE MANAGER] it should also show an example of that logo.

I suggest you take the card out, walk it down to your computer store,
and ask them what they can tell you about it. You also may try you
local neighborhood teenager. They are often up and cool about these
things.

Good luck. Keep us informed.
