I got a new machine and the old software doesn't recognize the new CD
writer. Any suggestions on a really current software writer? Thanks.

Give CD Burner XP Pro a try.(*)

I've also seen good reports on Deepburner, which is next on my list
to try:

(*)There's a known bug in CDBXPPRO: for some burners, it thinks they
can't do disk-at-once even though they can. My burner, unfortunately,
is one of those: I e-mailed the author about a fix but got no reply.
If it works correctly with your burner I think you'll be happy with
the interface.

The very latest version of Roxio's Easy Media Creator or Nero Burning
software should do it.

I prefer Ashampoo Burning Studio 5. Stable, easy-to-use, and not expensive.

Perhaps the old software company has an upgrade version ?? Or, a patch so it
will recognize your new CD writer.
