I posted this yesterday and got responses, but it keeps
saying message unavialble, so I couldn't read them. Here
was my question:

I run a number crunching program which uses 100% of the
CPU. When I try to run something else at the same time,
it can be quite slow or even stall. Is there a way to
check if additional RAM may help? Anythihng under the
Taskbar? I know RAM in general helps, but I don't know
if it would definitely help in this case.

Thanks again,

J

If your program is running your cpu at 100% why would you try to run
anything else.
When I render video, my cpu is at 100% and I don't do anything else till
it's done.
I have 1.5 Gigs of ram and a 3 GHz processor, but that don't help the 100%
situation.
Is your number crunching program up to date.
Bottom dollar, when you crunch you have to wait.

something else is not quite right....
I have run Photoshop 7 with a 100MB tiff image, had AutoCad 2000 in the
backround, along with Mathcad...no problem..
I have 1GB Ram...and a dedicated 4 GB of Pagefile and 5GB of dedicated
scratchdisk...and have never even come close to using that...

The reason you don't come close to that is cause your cpu is doing nothing.
Try exporting a 3 hour avi to mpg video file that takes 2 to 3 hours to
finish and watch your cpu go....

The stuff you have loaded is doing nothing while you look at it, and when it
does its takes only seconds.

In my old computer, using an AMDK6, the cpu seemed more
able to share CPU cycles. When I tried to do something
else when my numbers programs was running, the numbers
program would slow down and allow the second program to
function. But with this P4 system, it seems locked into
the numbers program. Does the P4 use a different
strategy?

Thanks (and I actually was able to read this one)
