Need more memory

I recently bought a new computer with 2GB of RAM. I'd like to run statistical programs with large databases using a statistical software package called STATA. STATA only allows me to set memory to a max of about 1.15 GB. If I try to increase it, STATA gives me the error message that the operating system refuses to provide more memory. When I check the performance menu in the Windows Task Bar there seems more memory available. How can this be? Is there are some kind of memory limit Windows XP assign to particular programs that could be changed

Advice would be greatly appreciated

Yes, 32bit Windows (Windows 98/ME/2000/XP) lives in a 4gb memory world.
Normally this is split the OS gets 2GB and apps get 2GB. In reality your
apps only get closer to 1.6gb in this configuration, which is what you are
experiencing. Even with 2GB of memory with 32bit Windows XP you will never
get to use it all by default. You can tweak this with the /3GB switch.
Search Microsoft for '4GB memory tuning' for more info. You really can get
access to 3GB of total memory with this tweak. It involves a boot.ini file
switch, and you also tweak the programs' executable.

My initial thought is that it is the program itself, since IT is the only thing saying that there is a problem. However, perhaps increasing your paging file might help some
