I am in desparate need of help! I had a computer freind
repartitian and reformat my pc, Mcaffe messed it up big
time. He told me to get norton on it asap before i do
naything else. Well guess what? NortonWILL NOT INSTALL
unless I have IE 5.01 or above. So I have been trying to
Upgrade my IE for the last 2 days, I am online right now
with NO anti virus protection because IE6 WILL NOT
install. I have no problem downloading it it just will not
install. I have always upgraded to IE6 but for some
reason, now it won't load and therefore I connot install
Norton, which I have paid for twice at this point.
Can ANYBODY help since it is absolutly impossible to
contact anyone at microsoft or norton. PLEEZE. I really
need this computer and immediate help. I could solve all
my problems if my husband would just get XP but he won't
do it and has no reason as to why.
Thank you to whomever can fix this problem.

I would seriously just tell him to upgrade to XP. If you
have a new (2002 or newer) computer, it's silly not to be
running XP.

For the moment never mind Norton, just download and install the AVG-6 Free
version anti-virus for now to provide some protection while you are on the
Internet, I don't think it will put us a fuss with your IE at this point.
It's pretty tame. Also, download and install the Zone Alarm Free firewall
for additional protection. Then you can concentrate on the problem more
safely. Then once you have your system straightened out, you can attempt the
Norton install again. :-)

Hope this helps.

Don't really know anything about reformatting and partitioning, so I can't
help you there. Sorry.

Now, you can always install some other *Free* AntiVirus program for the time
being, so that you will have some protection. Might I suggest AVG version 6
free? It works fine for me and I have run with it for > 1 year and have
Never gotten a virus. I might add, that many think that Norton is
"bloatware", not worth the load on a PC, a bear to Un-install, and not any
better than many other AV programs (Maybe McAfee would tie with Norton; some
say it is the worst). Others will swear by Norton, but many swear *at*
Norton. ;-) (I'm sorry if I'm adding any "insult" to your previously
sustained injury.)

So here is a link for free AVG6. Install if you like, and if you don't like
it, it is not *any* trouble to un-install, and will not need a special
remover as Norton will. At least you'll have some protection. (Firewall is
just as important, but for another time and place than now, I'd guess. If
using XP at least enable its built-in firewall.

AVG antivirus

Update it immediately after you install it (if you install it)

Then, we don't know what Operating System you are using. NT? ME? W98?
W98se? W95??? W2000? Probably not XP as it comes with IE6.

Might try a different newsgroup for that reformat/partition problem.
Here are links for that.
http://www.aumha.org/support.htm
I strongly recommend the W98.general discussion newsgroup if W98 is the
operating system. Otherwise you might try that which applies to your system.
Just click the links and it will open in Outlook express. Follow the
directions. Otherwise use the microsoft web page interface if you are more
comfortable with that.

That's the best I can offer. Sorry I'm of not much help.

Wild guess: WinME???

For the "unable to install all components" issue in WinME, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Thanks for letting me know where my posts and replies were. I'm an
idiot when it comes to this newsgroup thing. Anywho, Now suddenly my
crappy outlookexpress5 keeps causing an illegal operation, so I can't
send or recieve emails via OE, so I am using my alt email. Not sure if
this post will go just to you or the board for all to read so I
appologize for the duplicate reply post as I just sent one to Zee and
I'll send one to Jan as well just to touch bases with y'all for your
help. I am running 98SE and the free virus program would not download
let alone install becasue of IE, but the free firewall is installed.

anxiously awaiting any more help.

Thanks so much for the info. firewall is installed and running, but
the IE problem won't let me download let alone install the virus
program y'all told me to get.

It's OK Kristina, you'll eventually get things sorted out. ;-)

As I have stated, if you use the links I provided for Outlook Express (when
you can get it working) it will be much better for you to use it rather than
most other programs, but above all, it is miles better than the web page
site that MS offers to access the newsgroups.

Perhaps if the "Illegal op" thing appears you can just drag it out of the
way, and continue. If you click the "illegal Op" it will bring things to a
halt. See what happens if you just move it and ignore it for now.

That being said, let us deal with the initial problem. Let's see now...what
was it? Oh yeah, you can download but cannot install IE6.

Let's see if I have this right. You access Windows Updates and scan for
updates>scan says IE6 available> you download it> it doesn't install. Is
that the route you've been traveling?

OK, although you didn't have a AV program running, the most common reason
for a failed install from WU (Windows Updates) is due to an AV program
interfering. All AV programs should be disabled or their Resident background
protection disabled when one downloads (and installs directly) from Windows
Update. That being said, are you getting any error messages like:

Windows Update Setup
A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You
need to restart your computer to complete that installation before
running Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close. [ OK ]

OR:
Internet Explorer and
Internet Tools error message "Setup was unable to install
all the components. Please close all applications and
running Setup again."

You can try "Repair IE". Go to Control Panel>add/remove programs>scroll to
Microsoft Internet explorer>click add/remove>enable Repair option. It will
say whether that was successful or not. Same with the possibility to restore
previous version of IE.

If that fails then try this:
Ensure that your Temporary Internet Files are not filled to capacity. Might
as well empty them, *by the conventional method* of IE Options>Delete
files>delete all offline content>OK>OK out. Also empty the TEMP folder in
C:\Windows. **RE-BOOT first**, then open the TEMP folder>edit menu>Select
all> delete.

You can try running IE6 set-up in Safe Mode.

Drastic fixes here, for un-installing IE5; see links:

See this Google groups thread for more on the install issue:

Can you try another PC from a friend who has a CD burner and download IE6 to
it from Windows *Downloads* (not windows updates) and try to install that
way?

How about a direct download You can try that to see if it'll work and
install.

I've exhausted all ideas for the moment. If I get a spark of intuition or
genius, I'll post back.
