I want to transfer some large files between a laptop and
desktop by using a network 5e crossover cable. Both
computers have network jacts and are running XP-Pro. I
need a set of step by step instructions of what has to be
done to make this work. Does anyone know where I can
find this information or if you know how it's done, could
you provide the instructions.

Thanks
Guy Rondeau

1. Connect Cross-over cable
2. right click on network neighborhood on computer 1
3. double click on your Local Area Network icon
4. click on properties
5. double click on Internet Protocal
6. Select "Use the following IP address
7. IP address "192.168.1.100"
8. Subnet mask "255.255.255.0"
9. Default gateway "0.0.0.0"
10. goto computer 2
11. perform steps 3 through 6
12. IP address "192.168.1.101"

transfer your files over

Thanks for your instructions they were very useful but I
don't think they were complete. I spent hours trying to
get those two computers to communicate. I tried so many
things I don't really know what made it work but I was
finally able to copy the files from one computer to the
other when the shared folders from each computer showed
up on both computers in a workgroup I some how created.

I was suprised that I could not find a set of step by
step instructions for everything that had to be done.
For example, I originally thought I would see the other
computers directory by doubling clicking the My Computer
icon. I'm guess I'm kinda dumb and know very little
about this type of thing but I think that goes for about
98% of the population. If you could expand your
instructions to include everything that had to be done
and then what to do to see the other computer, I think it
would be very useful to a lot of us dumbies. If you
decide to do this, please send me a copy of the
instructions in case I ever have to do it again
([email protected]). By the way be sure to instruct
people to change their Local Area Connection back when
they are done because if they are like me, they won't be
able to use their cable modem until they do.

Please take my comments as a compliment as I think you
are someone that has the knowledge a ability to help
others out. Thanks again.
