I have a HP Deskjet 970Cxi. Both the colour and the black cartridges will
soon be empty.
Noticed the high costs of new original HP ink cartridges so am considering
HP compatible cartridges or refill kits.
Thing is I wouldn't want to harm my printer in any way by using other than
Original carts and also don't want any deterioration of print quality.
I'd be glad of any advice from experienced members of the group.
Thanks,
Pete

I'm new to this group and was interested by this post.

I tried using compatibles and it was a big mistake, messed up the
print heads on my Epson Photo 750. The printer is now useless
so I had to buy a new one. I would always buy original carts.
I do understand about prices for carts, I was paying a fortune
with original epson carts. My new Canon printer is cool and the
carts are so much cheaper.

However, I have not tried the refill kits so I can't comment on
them.

My printer uses the 78 (colour) and 45 (black) carts and I've successfully
refilled both with ink from Manx Print Care www.printconsumables.com. I
can't detect any difference in print quality from HP originals.

Hi Pete,

I'm a refill vendor (just a friendly warning....:-)

Using refurbished cartridges (there are no "compatibles") or refilling
yourself will not harm your printer. The only problem you might have is
that the printhead on the cartridge may get clogged or some resistors
may burn out or fail. If you don't refill, you would be throwing the
cartridge away anyhow - so what's to lose?

Refilling does work well for this printer. Find a reputable refiller in
the UK and I recommend you refill the 45 cartridge via a bottom fill
device. Make sure you get pigmented black ink.

Also - the printer has a chip that recognizes your cartridge and you
must overcome this when refilling. I have a couple workaround methods if
your ink vendor does not supply - email me and I'll send them to you.

Cheers & Happy Printing,
Al

Hi,

See responses in body below:

There are excellent compatible ink tanks for both the Epsons and Canons.
You may have bought some inferior ones or just sufferred a typical Epson
printheasd problem. The compatibles are inexpensive and will print with
equal quality.

Folllowing is a procedure that may ressurect your Epson if you want to
try it.

Here is a procedure recommended by Epson for stubborn clogs. I
have added the little trick of using Windex in the printhead as a
solvent...

This is worth saving as sooner or later, you will need it.

First, do the following:
Move the carriage assembly that holds the ink tanks to the center
and remove the ink tanks. Drip some windex (actually my cleaning
solution is best) into the ink ports that penetrate the tanks.
Reinstall the ink tanks and let set for 30 minutes and do the following
procedure as prescribed by Epson:

Head cleaning process for Epson:

If using the printer's cleaning buttons on the control panel does
not clear the print head. The printer's cleaning utility program
should be used which is a more intense method.

IMPORTANT! A head cleaning and nozzle check page must be
performed as a cycle so subsequent cleanings will advance to a
higher intensity cleaning cycle. This process ought to be
repeated until the nozzle check prints correctly. When the nozzle check
prints correctly the printer is ready to go. If you run more than
6 cleaning cycles and the nozzle check is still not printing
correctly, the ink cartridge may need replacement or the printer may require
service. First make sure your printer has fresh ink cartridges
then do the following in Windows:

1. Click Start - Printer - Settings in Windows 95/98
or open Control Panel - Printers in Windows 3.1
2. Click on your Stylus printer model
3. Click on Properties
4. Click on Utilities
5. Run Nozzle Check

Click here to see a nozzle check pattern...
http://www.netwares.com/nozcheck.gif

6. Check printout for missing black or color ink. If any lines
are missing, that indicates a clogged ink nozzle(s)
7. Click on Head Cleaning
8. Run Nozzle Check
9. Repeat head cleaning/nozzle check 3 times
10. If no improvement, repeat cleaning/nozzle check sequence up
to 6 times.

Depending on the severity of the blockage, after going through
this cycle up to 6 times (with fresh ink cartridges) some
improvement should be noticed, if not totally cleared. If
improvement is noticed, continue the cleaning/nozzle check
cycles until the blockage is cleared. Slight improvement may be
seen after each cycle. This could require many cleaning cycles in
sets of 3 cleaning/nozzle checks but as long as improvement is
continous it should solve the problem.

Pete

The original cartridges are good for about 3 refills and do not let
the cartridges go empty. That is usually the end of the cartridge.

What is the difference between the printer you have (HP970Cxi) and the
HP970Cse, that I have ?
The Cxi is a network printer but any printer can be a network printer.
right ?

Thinking about buying new cartridge off eBay - what do you reckon?
Pete

It depends on your application.
My experience, and I have used refill kits from about 6 different
sources, HP are the ones to get if color accuracy is important. In
particular the reds are the worse ones.
We print many things that don't required color accuracy but for
photography the best is HP cartridges and HP paper.
As I mentioned before, don't wait for the cartridge to be empty.
It's a decent printer but be prepared to replace the foot kicks (?)
that most HP printers use today and the mediocre drivers that result
in many unpredictable situations .

Hi Al,

Would you know the answer to this question:-

The reference of some new HP ink I was considering buying is C6578AE...do
you know what the E means? The ink I require (so my manual says) is either
C6578D - Can't see any mention of the E?
Thanks,
Pete
