Have 6 templates created in Word 97 (with simple macros) that are opened in
Word XP. Conversion seems ok with the exception of:

1. When try to use track changes in the 2002 doc, the formatting of the
document is affected. How do I stop this?

2. Table of Contents works fine in 97 version, but in 2002 version, it
won't update without pushing the page numbers off by one and intermittently
causing an error that says it can't find information.

3. When printing in any version except Word 97, formatting is off. Is
there any way to stop this from happening?

Any help is appreciated!

In Tools > Options > Track Changes, set the Use Balloons option to "Never".
When balloons are used to display changes, the text margin moves to make
room for them.

The off-by-one may be a result of the reflow of text, described in answer 3.
I'm not sure about the "can't find" errors, but it's possible that some of
the hidden bookmarks that Word uses to make a TOC from heading styles got
zapped. Maybe someone else will know how to fix it.

Whenever you use a different printer driver -- which usually happens when
you go to a different PC, change the Windows version, or install a new
printer -- Word can get different information about character widths. In
extreme cases this can push whole words to another line and change where the
page breaks are. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/TextReflow.htm for
information.
