NEED HELP!!!

I have created a real problem for myself. I was moving a 4Gb folder to a
remote PC and in the process of doing other things I forgot the folder was
moving. I then held down the power button to force a shutdown due to another
issue I was having. Of course I realized afterwards what I had done. When I
restarted my laptop the folder was no longer there and it wasn't on the
remote machine either. The files are still using up 4Gb of space on my hard
drive but i have no way to retrieve them. Even file recovery software doesn't
seem to find them, maybe because they are still being read somehow (used
space). Either way I need to know how that I may eiteher delete these files
or recover the entire directory. They are not of great importance so I would
rather lose them than the disc space. I deleted the original (now empty)
folder in which they were located in an attempt to get the disc space back
but it did not work. Also recovery software would only recover the files and
i would still be stuck with the used disc space which i need back. I just
reformatted less than two weeks ago and would LOVE to not have to do it
again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The files - or part of them - probably got stuck in your RAM and are
partially lost.
I would start by running chkdsk. Go to Start => Run and type in
"cmd" {without the quotes}.
Presuming the files were on your C: root drive:
In the command window type in "chkdsk /f /r" {without the quotes and
with a space before /f and /r}.
You will be asked to confirm the program to run on the next startup.
Yes to this.

If it's not the C; drive the command would be:

chkdsk D: /f /r {where D: is the drive you want to check.

After you restart and chkdsk has run, run the Disk Defragmenter.

Thanks for the reply. I had already tried chkdsk a couple of times before but
i tried it again exactly as you said just to be sure. It didn't help any. The
space is still being used by those files. i am assuming that since windows is
still reading the space as being used then recovery is going to be really
hard to accomplish. i have even tried at least 4 different types of
professional recovery software and all fail to retrieve any of these missing
files. i tried windows system restore a couple of different times as well.
System restore gave the directory folders back but no files. i was moving the
folder because of low disc space. windows had already purged most of my
restore points so i had limited choices. i had a couple of registry backups
saved but these did not help either. i'm fairly pc literate and can fix most
problems on my own but this one really has me stumped. do you have any more
ideas i could try?
