i recently put service pack 4 on my win2k pc.after this i
could not connect to the net.my isp had me ping the bbci
website which worked ok as did entering their ip manualy
but could not surf from there or even log onto my
isp.removed and reinstalled tcp/ip, nothing.in despair i
uninstalled the pack and straight back on the net no
problems, except now it takes an age to boot, the task bar
appears but then it takes up to 5 mins for any icons to
appear on the desktop.also when i double click on C drve
and select properties nothing happens so i cant access the
disc fragmenter this way.any

Hi Ray,

As Cecil said, removing ZA will help with the SP4 issue.

As for long logon times, *usually* this is indicative of using an ISP DNS
server in a machine's IP properties. In an AD environment, we would only
want to use our internal DNS server, since that guy holds all the AD
records. Just wanted to mention that. If you have ISP's DNS addressses,
you'll want to remove them and use a Forwarder for efficient Internet
resolution.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300202 shows how to setup a Forwarder.

Also would like to confirm that your AD DNS domain name is not a single
label name. This has been confirmed to be an issue so far with SP4 installs.
You can check the AD domain name by looking in your ADUC. This name should
not be a single label name. This name should also match up with the zone
name in DNS and should also be the same name as the Primary DNS Suffix. To
see the suffix, you can do an:
ipconfig /all
and it will be listed in the top of the output. Netlogon uses that name to
register into the DNS zone, but can't be a single label name. There is a
bandaid for it.

Let me know if this applies to you and I'll post more info. If your name is
correct, and you uninstall ZA and reinstall SP4 and it works, grreat! If the
name is correct and the reinstall of SP4 still doesn;t work, I can forward
this info to our contact in Microsoft. I have an issue from another person
that all is correct with names and everything else, but SP4 caused it to
stop functioning correctly. So let me know.

ace thx for your reply but it is not logon times but boot
ups which are a problem,i will try removing ZA and
reapplying the sp4 to see if this resolves.why would i
lose something like the right click -properties-to
drives.has uninstalling sp4 done this?

Long boots and long logon times are usually caused by the same reason.

No being able to rt-click on the drive seems to point to something getting
corrupted in the shell. Any changes to IE? That can cause that too. Having
something like ZA installed during an SP install can cause similar issues
because it may be blocking a certain dll from installing or overwriting.

But then again, a long wait time for rt-clicking or anything else in the
shell I would say something is corrupt and/or some process hanging in the
user environment or in explorer. When you go into Task Manager, select the
Process tab, click on the CPU column, what is taking up all the process
percentages?

Instead of typing in ipconfig /all at the Start/Run line, goto start/run,
type in cmd, then the command window pops up. Then type in exactly:

ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

Then goto Windows Explorer, C: drive, look for that file, and then attach it
to your next response.

ADUC = Active Directory Users and Computers console.

Basic troublshooting tools and methods. :-)

hi ace, sorry took so long.
did ipconfig

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : d2_freak
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

does this help?
this is a home pc and not on a network, also dont have
server so no ADUC
i feel that your assumtion previously that something in
the shell may be corrupt or missing is nearer the mark as
this fault only occoured after i uninstalled the service
pack. is there a repair tool of some sort or is that xp i
am thinking of. havent tried to reinstall the pack
yet.going to back up some personal stuff first just in
case something else goes wrong

I see, I thought it was part of a domain.
Not sure at this point. I would try uninstalling the service pack and give
that a shot.
