I have WinPatrol (free version) on my XP Home operating system and
yesterday while running different applications a window kept popping
up telling me that WinPatrol has detected a new startup program and
asking if I wanted to enable it.

The information provided for the new startup program is as follows:

Winlogon: Userinit v. 5.1.2600.5512 and is located at:
C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe

Here is the question: how do I know if this is the legitimate
....userinit.exe- which I've learned is vital to the operation of the
windows operating system and the bootup sequence.

or a trojan.

I have not enabled it as a startup program and it is not found in
msconfigure startups and yet there seems to be no problem booting up
the PC or with its full usage.

Any insights or input would be appreciated,

Mary

I would send a note to (e-mail address removed) if you have any
problems.

But if you want to know if it's a trojan, got to http://www.virustotal.com
and you can upload it to the virus checker. You'll find out quickly
who thinks it's a threat.

Thank you db and Bill for the response and suggestions - guess it's
not a trojan, it passed the virus total scan. WinPatrol has also
mysteriously stopped with the popups?

Mary

you're welcome.

but they will likely
pop up again and
your email will get
annoying spam
from win patrol.

best to uninstall it.

there are better
tools available.

what exactly are
you looking for?

I have been using the free version of WinPatrol for 3 years now and
like the fact that it displays Startup Programs, Services, Active
Tasks, Scheduled Tasks, File Types, Cookies,Hidden Files, alerts when
a new program is attempting to start up at boot, etc. - all in one
location.

I'm sure there are other similar applications that accomplish these
things and perhaps more.
