had a server crash at a customers. I fixed the hardware and reloaded the
Win2k ServerOS from scratch, setup the domain again. Its a single server
network with about 50 clients. The server is working fine, running Active
Directory, DNS, DHCP, and WINS. Clients logging in OK and ipconfig on the
client shows that all the IPs are correct and the same for the DHCP, DNS, and
WINS. Gateway is correct for the router IP address. Router config shows an
active connection to Verizon DSL line with outside IP and DNS addresses, but
NONE of the clients can get an internet conn including the server. In
experimenting with the router, I can get out to the internet only if I allow
the router to be the DHCP server and use DHCP on the client. As soon as I
change the router to disable DHCP, and return the server to DHCP function,
even with the clients getting good DHCP addresses, no internet connection.
Obviously I dont want the router being the DHCP server as that is the job of
the server. I have eliminated a problem with the router as being the cause by
trying (3) different routers, all with the same results. It would seem to be
something in the server causing the block. Is there anything that I could
have missed, maybe installed by default in Win2k Server, that would be
preventing an internet connection with the server on the network? Any ideas
would be appreciated. Chuck Mueller. (e-mail address removed)
