I have recently bought a new desktop pc and have installed
windows xp pro in it.I have an external CD rewriter wich
requires usb 2 to operate at its maximum writing and
reading speed but usb2 does not work. However when I tried
to install usb2 drivers it would not let me because of the
service pack 1 already installed in my system. My
motherboard is an ASUS P4P800 wich supports usb2.Can you
tell me whether is a hardware or a software problem and
how can solve it?Thank you in advance.

gday George
Have you checked your BIOS settings to make sure USB
functionality is set to "2.0" or "1.1/2.0" rather than
just "1.1"?

Have same MB and XP SP1 - look in device manager under Universal Serial Bus"
and make sure one of your entries is for an "Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Host
Controller Ich5".

If you do not one of two things needs to be done:

Check CMOS as mentioned earlier to make sure your USB 2.0 settings are
correct, if correct...
Delete all of your USB controllers and hubs, restart the computer and allow
XP to redetect.

If you are trying to use front panel connectors then all bets are off as
these connectors need to be USB 2.0 capable. You can have everything
correct in CMOS and XP and the front connectors will not work!

Good Luck,
Len
