Hi Everybody,

I bought this Asus motherboard recently and tried installing the
WindowsXP Pro OS. When I switch on the PC, I do not see anything on
video monitor. I do not see any BIOS info or anything. The screen
remains blank. The HDD and CD drive blinks and goes off, nothing
happens after that. I have 1 Samsung 512MB DDR400 memory bank
installed. There is nothing wrong with the monitor since it works fine
with my current PC.

I put the WindowsXP CD in the DVD+/-RW drive to see if it will boot
but nothing happens. Same with the CD that came with the motherboard
though I don't think it was meant to be used this way. The motherboard
gets power since I see and hear the fans running, and LEDs/keyboard
lighting up.

Should I install a BIOS or something like that ? According to the user
guide that accompanied the motherboard, it looks like the BIOS is
already installed and configured. How do I get to the BIOS menu(tried
<ALT>+<F2>, doesn't work) ? Is something wrong with the VGA or
something like that ?

I tried everything I could think of but no luck. I would appreciate
your ideas and thoughts to bring this PC to life.

Thanks in advance to all

There should be two power connectors for the motherboard. The
standard 20pin ATX power connector and a 2x2 +12V power connector
which powers the processor. If your ATX power supply doesn't have the
2x2 connector, you may need an upgrade (as I've never seen a drive
cable to 2x2 adapter, and it is likely the power supply wouldn't have
enough current on +12V, if it is of a vintage that there isn't a 2x2
square connector for the processor).

Make sure the 2x2 connector is plugged in. If fans spin, but there
is no video, that is one cause of the problem.

Also, first thing to do with a new computer, is get a copy of
memtest86 from memtest86.com or memtest86+ from memtest.org. This
program can either be used to make a bootable floppy (no messy DOS
files needed, as the floppy contains a standalone bootable image
and no normal file system), or you can make a bootable ISO CD.

By testing the memory first, you'll avoid all sorts of grief later,
if memory corruption screws up your OS install.

HTH,
Paul
