I'm hoping some-one can help with just ONE thing
Windows ME - one of its updates was a change of update engine
Can anyone point me to the specific download (by name/number) of this update
?

I've poste in the ME group but to date no specific answer and this is urgent
am trying to fix a friends PC which needs complete reload.

I know of the existence of this (and that ME updates don't work without it)
from about a year ago when I fixed my daughters PC

Apologies for posting here - hope some-one will assist an old codger without
too much criticism for wrong posting. Friend needs his PC back for his kids
schoolwork, rather urgent.

This is an XP group and I'd be happy to give you some
answer, but what exactly to you want to know? Why don't you
open the Windows Knowledge Base and search it?

When you do a complete reload (format and reinstall) be sure
you have backups for the kids school work, because it will
be gone.

Hi Len,

The update engine has changed several times over the past few years. The
easiest way to reload it is to reload the controls. To reinstall the Windows
Update site controls, you must first remove the old controls. The following
are generic steps for all versions of Windows, so not all may apply to your
system:

Remove Controls:
1. Click on Start, then Run.
2. Type in 'regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u' (without the quotes) click OK. You should
get a successful message, click OK on that as well.
3. Click on Start/find/files, choose to look in C:\
4. Type in the file name IUCTL.DLL and click Search Now. Delete every copy
of this file that you find.
5. Run the search again for the file IUENGINE.DLL. Again, delete every copy
of this file you find.

Delete Windows Update files:
1. Double-click on My Computer.
2. Open the C drive
3. Open the Program Files folder
4. Open the Windows Update folder.
5. Delete everything in the folder except the V4 folder.
6. Next, Open the V4 folder, if it exists.
7. Delete everything in the folder except the iuhist.xml file
8. Close Window

Then revisit the WindowsUpdate site and you will be prompted to reinstall
the V4 site controls.

Thanks Rick - that's the advice I needed, I think (I am operating from my
own XP PC, the ME problem PC is some miles away)
Jim's advice (visit the knowledgebase) - I already tried, but no joy in
posing question on ME update engine.
Thanks again,
Sincerely, Len.

I have no internet access on the ME PC (it's an HP)
Have completely wiped the HDD and used HP's restore disk set (2 CD's) via a
boot disk to re-load ME and all hardware drivers (automatically)

Successful. PC works, but CDRW drive seems to be kaput. Separate DVD drive
works fine. For some reason they are set up (by HP installation) as drives M
and N ( and there's no drives D .. L ).

Your procedure - part 1 step 2 errored, probably because in step 4, there
are NO files IUCTL.DLL anywhere on C:
Nor is there a file IUENGINE.DLL ( nor a Windows Update folder, so the
subsequent steps cannot be done )

No access to internet till I return the PC to its owner (I have cable access
via a LAN card, not compatible with her dial-up modem)

I'm just hoping that ME Update will run - any thoughts on what I should do
if it doesn't ? As stated, my memory of ME update engine change goes back to
when I loaded ME upgrade over W98 on my daughter's PC - perhaps a "clean"
install is different ?
Appreciate yr thoughts - Len

Hi Len,

Those files won't exist until they are installed by the first visit to the
update site. There is nothing special you should have to do.
