Need help with networking problem

I (and my three staff) use Microsoft Word 2002 with Windows XP
Professional.

We are changing over from standalones to a network setup. I would
like my staff to be able to "see" the many macros and Auto Text
entries that I have generated.

My thought is that I just drop my Normal.dot template into the common
network directory, and then change each user's path to point to that
document as their default template, but my guess is that it's either
not that easy, or that there are unanticipated consequences, or both.

I am sure that there are articles, either in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base and/or elsewhere, that comment on the networked use of Word. I
would appreciate it if someone in the group could suggest some
articles to help me avoid pitfalls or learn the best way to take
advantage of the network.

Thanks and best regards,

George Lutz

Hi George

You are right - sharing Normal.dots, putting them on network drives, and
making them read only do all have nasty results. Normal.dots need to be left
alone in each user's user templates directory (which should be left on the
local drive), to be used for personal customizations and Word's own dark
secrets.

To share common toolbars, macros and similar, you need to store them in
templates. See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/DistributeMacros.htm
for more information.
