Hi,

I have a very old P120MHz processor which is cooled by a heat sink and fan.
Due to it's age after recently transporting the machine the heat sink and
fan fell off the processor. As a result the fan no longer works and needs
replacing, the question is, where can I get hold of a socket 7 fan and how
do I re-attach the heat sink to the processor? It's not really worth
repairing the machine but I can't believe it will be expensive and I feel it
would be good experience and it won't matter if I destroy it! So, any
suggestions on what I need to buy and where to buy it in the UK either
online or on the high street? Thanks in advance.

Socket 7 CPU sockets usually have two tabs - one on either side - on the
socket. Did one of those snap off, or did the bracket that holds the
heatsink in place just come undone during transit? If it just came undone,
you just need to hook one side of the clip in place and then snap the other
side down and in, towards the socket.

If you can still clip the heatsink in place, just remove the fan and go with
a heatsink. You can get away with a heatsink only up till about 233 MHz.

If the socket is okay and you still wish to buy a new fan/heatsink combo,
just search Google for "socket 7 heatsink fan" or some such keywords and
then narrow it down to locations in the UK.

I can't see any tabs or brackets, the heat sink looks like a small block of
brass with a smooth base and ridges along the top. It is no bigger than the
CPU and does not overlap it at all. It had some red stuff on it which looks
like it was an adhesive of some sort which held the heat sink in place but I
have no idea what sort of adhesive it would be. Any suggestions?
