Need Help: Windows System Error - device failure - tia

Seemingly at random, I get the following error:

The headline bar of the message says - "Windows - System Error"

while the dialog say " Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a
device failure. Please save your work and reboot to restore full
functionality."

In addition, the resolution of my monitor has been changed to what I
would have expected in 98 safe mode startup.

On inspection of the device manager, there are no devices which show
errors or warnings.

Of course my first question is how to stop this from happening, but also
is there anyway to know just what error or device failure occurred?

Your two problems appear to indicate an issue with your graphics driver. Try
download and installing the latest version from your video card
manufacturer's website.
