I'm using Outlook Express as a news reader and have set up messaage rules to
filter out any and all posts from Measekite, the ALL CAPS poster. Problem
is that he still shows up in posts that reply to him. He is like a turd
that you flush, but keeps coming back up into the stool.

I'm at the point that I am ready to kill filter anyone that replys to him,
but before that, will see if there are any other options.

Is there any way to kill any posts that reference him in the content of the
post using Outlook Express? If not, what reader (if there is one) will do
this?

If there are other ways to approach this problem, I would appreciate hearing
them. Thanks in advance.

It appears that we can only continue to request that participants stop
responding to the troll, and that those who do should delete his ALL-CAPS
drivel so no one has to see it. Unfortunately, Outlook Express won't
killfile based on content of a message.

Unfortunately, Outlook Express won't killfile based on content of a message.

There are filters you can add on to OE, for example all caps filtering.
This is not something i've personaly looked into as I prefer not using
outlook express.

http://email.about.com/cs/oepluginreviews/gr/ihatespam_oe.htm

But one might beable to filter a message based on the full reply
headers rather than depend on filtering out all caps messages.

For example:
@newssvr12.news.prodigy.com:"

where the field "measekite <[email protected]>" almost always denotes
a message where he is auto quoted. "Measekite said:" (as in "measkite
said: <snipped per request>) what I tend to use can be added as well.

Message filtering should be able to not only filter his messages, but
those who reply to him.

I set up Mozilla to mark his posts 'as read' so that when I advance to
the next unread message, I don't land on them. Then I also set it to
flag them so I can visually see any replies below that will be useless.

I've been shit-binning all who even mention him.
I assure you that you will not miss anything by killing all the
troll-feeders too.
There's plenty of good people lurking here who do not participate in that
crap, so you really won't miss a thing.

Try Thunderbird. It can filter based on From, Subject, date; From being
the useful one here.
Thunderbird is also spam resistant (built in Bayesian filter), and safer
than Outlook versions for running "bad things" that come in or as part
of email.

Outlook Express has the same filters. The "from" filter is what I've used
to delete the file before I ever see it. What is needed is a filter for
message content so that any message that includes the troll's name or email
address would also be killfiled. The description of Thunderbird in the
preceding post didn't include character strings in the message content.

You should be able to filter on the From and Subject lines. The problem is
that the idiots who reply to this moron do not know how to spell. I filter
on:

Measekite
measekite
measekites
Measekites
Measkites
Measkite

I can't remember the last time I saw one of these posts.

You can also filter for Moosebite, Mousetripe, Mess-shite, Mean-tyke,
etc., but you still won't filter out his posts in other peoples responses
with Outlook Express. At the risk of belaboring the point, when someone
includes the MK post in his/her response, the troll's name does not appear
in the "subject" or "from" lines. It is imbedded in the body of the message.
A filter for content in the body of the message is included in Outlook but
not, to my knowledge, in Outlook Express. To reiterate my suggestion and
that of several other participants, the newsgroup would be a kinder,
gentler, less cluttered place if everyone killfiled him or stopped
responding to him. If you just can't restrain yourself you should at least
deleted his all-caps messages when responding so no one else has to see his
garbage.

I have been just adding the responders to the same killfile list M goes
in, but your question prompted me to do a bit of Googling.
http://www.tweakxp.com/article37300.aspx has a method to allow filtering
on the content of a message in newsgroups. I just tried it and it seems
to work!

Moz, and it's leaner brother, Thunderbird, also make killing an entire
thread easy. Just hit K, and the whole thread disappears. Both are free
at Moz. org

Not going to happen. Thunderbird is superior to OE from a number of
viewpoints. Killing threads that have turned ugly, for whatever reason,
is achieved by the letter K.

Although you can't killfile on message content in OEx, you could use
'Find' to identify any messages already downloaded containing the text
'mease'. Then mark them up (ignore/flag) and delete them. A bit
messy, and probably only worthwhile if you've got a lot of messages to
go through.

Anyone who's ever been on newsgroups knows that there is a lot of spam.
Outlook express doesn't allow you to filter newsgroup messages by
words in the body of the message, so you often have to grin and bear
it.

If you don't know what I'm talking about then chances are that you
don't need this filter. But people who use Usenet have been
complaining for ages that Outlook Express doesn't have this capability.
There are spammers who change their name 20 times a day and the normal
Outlook Express filters are ineffective against that. Anyway, here's
the solution.

You have to be comfortable playing around in your Windows registry.

First, (outlook express), create a normal newsgroup rule, and tell it
to filter out
any messages with "XYZ" (or whatever) in the subject line, and
remember what you called the filter, because you'll need to know that
name later.

***Note: Be sure to specify the newsgroup you wish to apply this rule
to, as this is the only thing you won't be able to change after.

Then go into your registry and find that new filter, which will be in
HKCU/identities/<your identity>/software/microsoft/Outlook
express/5.0/rules/news.
Once you're there you'll see a bunch of numbered folders, and if you
click
on each of them once you can find the one that has the "Name" value
that you
assigned to the rule you created.
Open up that folder, then open up the Criteria folder that's inside
that.

Now, inside the Criteria folder will be one or two folders labelled 000
and 001. If there is only one (000), left-click it once. If there are
two (000) and (001), select the one with the higher number (001).

Double click on the word "type" in the right pane, and change the value
data
setting to 9.

Restart your computer, and you have just created an outlook filter that
you
can use to filter out newsgroup messages that have certain words within
the body of
the message, like "buy now", or whatever.
