We are in the process of setting up a new small business. To begin with it
is going to be VERY small - only two computers. There will probably be a
third added within 6 months or so.

There is an application that we intend to use that needs to work off of a
server with its clients. What is the best server software to start with? We
don't want to spend a great deal of money - from the research I've done, one
of the cheaper Dell PowerEdge servers is going to cost around $2200 with
tape drive backup and with Small Business Server.

Is that the best way to go? The business that I currently work in runs
Windows NT 2000, and I do know a little about it. I've never used Small
Business Server as an OS.

Obviously I am needing a crash course in networking a small business. Can
anyone out there help me? I would sure appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Barry

A lot of it is personal preference for the most part. IBM, COMPAQ, HP, DELL
are all good servers. If you are going to use Small Business Server, there
are deals where you can get everything together pre-installed. You just plug
it in and it's working in 10 min. Check out Microsofts site, I think they
list Partners there that you could contact.

What you propose as OS and hardware sounds perfect for your situation. You
need to focus on how you'll organize the network. I don't mean physically,
but rather logically. Its a good idea to learn DNS and how to manage a
domain. Lets suppose you decide to name the domain "mydomain.com" or
"mydomain.local" and you realize you want to change the name, you'll be in
for a shocker.

You'll find a good source of info at Technet:
