Need help recovering from a crash

Thank goodness for you guys!!! I crashed my system and if it hadn't been for
the help I got in this NG I would have been a goner.

The problem: I couldn't boot normally into W2000Kpro. Everything would
go fine until the wallpaper had loaded, then I got an hourglass along with
my cursor and the system just locked up. Anyone have any experience with
this type of problem (i.e. cause, easy fixes, etc.)?

The repair: When I tried to reboot using LKG configuration, I got the
same results as in "The problem." I was able to boot into Safe Mode. While
in SM, I tried restoring the data in the ERDNT folder. It was successful,
but did not fix the problem. Then I did a Backup | Restore (thank Frank
Booth Snr for helping me get the system settings backed up). This did fix
the problem.

Help needed: 1) I thought I had backed up the system settings to my flash
drive. But apparently, I failed to do this correctly. Any tips? 2)
The system settings were a month old. I see that I have lost some settings.
Is there a way to restore any of these settings without simply redoing all
the changes made during the last month? 3) Can I use ERDNT and
restore my registry to the last good backup? 5) In Safe Mode, I was
unable to access the internet. Did I need to do something other than
choose Safe Mode with Networking? 4) Finally, if anyone has any
suggestions or tips for recovering from a crash that I didn't use, I would
be ecstatic to have them pointed out to me.

Again, thanks everyone for your gracious help in getting me ready for this
crash. I don't know what I would have done without you!

Hi,

You might try going here,
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
That's Mike Lin's website on his StartUp Control Panel

If you can't get it installed, because it won't boot all the way, you
can do an Inplace Upgrade Installation
Use your OS CD with CD ROM enabled
Or use your four boot discs
For further explanation go here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=292175
and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=306952

These tell you how to complete an InPlace Install

After you have completed, you will need to reinstall your service packs.
Try installing the StartUp CPL, before adding the Service Packs and if
you have a problem, you can start the Control Panel to uncheck possible
conflicts in your system.

Good Computing,
dcdon

Yeessh! More drastic than I wanted, but good to know in case I need it.

Now this is more like it. This link lead me to "238359
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238359/) Differences between manual and
fast repair in Windows," which is exactly what I was looking for.
