We have a system, running Windows 2000 Pro, Service Pack 3, with 512k
ram, 40g HD (19g free hard drive space). Suddenly system has gone
into SLOW motion, cannot run any programs.

When you go under "Task Manager" then "processes" services is taking
99% of cpu capabilities. This is before opening any programs. System
slows down in boot mode after loading windows start-up and network
start-up, BEFORE log-in. Log-in takes about 10 minutes.

Tried to run NOD but unable because CPU is running at capacity.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc.

I will check back here shortly but also welcome any replies by email
at (e-mail address removed) or the address shown below.

Thanks.

Could be Sasser. Did you run McAfee's Stinger?

Hi Art,

Thanks for the reply. I stopped by Symantec first to check new
virus/worms and thought too that it might be Sasser. Got Symantec's
fix and husband is in process of running it on sick system now. Will
let you know. If their fix doesn't work then we'll try McAfee's
Stinger next.

Actually, it sounds more like the "issue" they are having with the
MS04-011 patch on some W2K systems. Somethingto do with
problems loading drivers.

I think the problem is that when I originally posted my message even
though I thought I cross-referenced it to oth a.c.v and a.c.a-v it
only showed up in one of them. Then I resent the message to the one
that it didn't show up in but think my subject was a little different
and it appears that time, it showed up in both groups.

Confusing, huh?

confusing ... to say the least. :)

In re the hotfix: can't find anyting. They seem to insist on a
call so that "The usual support costs will apply to additional
support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question."

The a.c.a-v entry had an extra dot at the end.
