Tim

Have upgraded to Win XP, did a "clean" install.
All seemed fine for almost a week.
Now...
some programs will not install.
Progress bar freezes and I have to End Task.
Windows update, also will not complete even tho it used
to.
Also, Media Player will not work, even tho it used to. I
haven't done anything to my PC to warrant sudden changes.
Any advice?

Are you using a firewall? Did you enable a firewall BEFORE you connected
your machine to the internet? It only takes a matter of minutes for an
unprotected machine to be compromised after the internet connection is
initiated. As an experiment, a friend of mine was reformatting his system
anyway so he uninstalled all firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spyware then
plugged in his DSL modem and we started a timer. At twelve minutes, twenty
three seconds, his system was infected with the blaster worm. We pulled the
plug and he continued with his format and reinstall. Scan your system for
viruses, worms, spyware and trojans.

Tim,

You are probably infected by some malware.

1) Install or enable a firewall and / or install a NAT router for
protection. I recommend both a firewall and router if you can afford
it.
2) Get a good antivirus protection (Norton or McAfee are commonly
available). Install and update it, and scan your system.
3) Get malware (not antivirus) detection / protection (free).
AdAware and Spybot S&D for primary protection. HijackThis for
immediate use. This article will explain everything you need to do:

4) Once you clean your system, update with all the security patches
from Microsoft, at <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com>.

This article will describe an example of what can happen to you if you
don't protect yourself. Blaster was last months pest of the month.
Maybe you have next months. Who knows till you scan everything.
