I was able to use Win media encoder on my computer at work, but had no way to
save to DVD, so tried at home, and Win Media encoder wouldn't work on my home
computer, have no idea why, so borrowed a family members laptop yesterday,
win media encoder installed on it and ran, had to save the files to DVD and
now that I have the one I really need a piece of video from, and have moved
it from DVD to temp file, I am getting the following error: The file
E:\VTS_01_02.1.wmv is not indexed and cannot be imported, what do I do now. I
need this one little section of video desperately. Thanks.

standard video DVDs have files that are MPEG-2 with .VOB extensions, not
..wmv extensions.

did you copy it from the disc and simply rename the extension to .wmv... or
did you do a conversion to make it a .wmv file?

-- I used one of the DVD's I had originally burn using Nero, used Windows
media encoder and that program changed the .vob file to a .wmv file.
I tried it here at work this morning and still get the same message.
There are just have 9 frames from my original project that i need to
retrieve due to it being lost on my computer.
After I used Windows media encoder, it plays, like I mentioned, just can't
import it due to the error that I typed in previously.
Thanks.

The encoder installation includes a utilty named File Manager... open and
close the file with it... it'll re-index it automatically as it closes. You
don't need to do anything more than than. Then try it again in Movie Maker.

I hate to keep bugging you with what probably is trivial stuff, but where is
file manager in Windows media encoder??
Can you give me specific instructions for doing what you told me above, if i
get it in the next two hours, will do it here at work, then when I get home,
will see if i can import it at that time, if not, will send you another post
after 6 p.m. EST or so.
Thanks.

Sorry Becca... it might help if I used its right name 'Windows Media File
Editor'

See the indexing section of my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video >
WMV page.

FYI -- On my Start menu, the Windows Media File Editor is listed under
Windows Media|Utilities.

John, Got it done finally, got the section I wanted to import back into my
WMM, yeah. The video I had taken with my camera which was the part I was
trying desperately to retrieve, was in collections pane, but I had to
manually put it on the timeline. All is good, just have to do some
rearranging now.
One more question, I had hoped that video (I had taken with my digital
camera and used in my DVD project) would automatically go back into the
Videos folder in my computer, but didn't. Is there anyway for me to copy
those two clips from the My Collections pane back onto My Computer, so that I
can backup those two files, in case they ever get lost again, don't want to
have to go thru that whole process again, smile. I appreciate all your help.
Great big thanks.

Hi Becca,

Movie Maker doesn't copy your file when you 'import' it.... a better word
might be 'link' to it. All it gets is the info about where the file is
located on your computer, the basic info about it, and a few pixels to make
a thumbnail. The source file itself needs to stay in place as you use it in
Movie Maker.

That would also mean you don't have a backup copy of it unless you make it
yourself from the source file. Movie Maker doesn't have any backup features
for source files.

Think of Movie Maker as a one-way street. You can only go from source file
to collection, and collection to project... not back in the other direction
from project to collection, or collection to your hard drive.

Thanks...
