Need help: Norton Internet Security breaks Workgroup networking

I had to rebuild my Win2k box and have updated it with the latest Win2k
updates from MS. After installing the last of the updates I verified
that I could see my laptop on the network.

The next thing I did was to install NIS 2005. After that (and running
Liveupdate) I could see the laptop, but not any of its shares. When I
would doubleclick on it I would get an error message that the volume
does not contain a recognized file system.

After uninstalling NIS, removing and then re-installing Client for
Windows Networking, I am able to see the laptop again.

All help would be appreciated.

TIA,

Les

Did you correctly configure the NIS firewall to allow local networking?

I forgot to mention that I *turned off* the firewall. On a previous
attempt I had also tried setting a range, 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.200, in
the firewall configuration. That didn't work either.

Turning the firewall off usually doesn't cut it, you'll probably have to
uninstall it while you get your network configured and then re-install it
when that process is complete.

This is what I did. I completely uninstalled Norton and then got
networking working again so I could access the other computer.

Now the question is, if I re-install Norton, what do I need to do to
keep it from whacking the workgroup networking?

If turning the firewall off doesn't work, and setting a range of
addresses as trusted doesn't work, what would be the next step?

If the network is configured correctly, setting the correct address ranges
as "allowed" in NIS should preserve your networking ability. Unfortunately
I can't give you specific advice as I do not use Norton or Symantec
products.
