I downloaded the necessary update files to install Service Pack-2 but did
not install them. I changed my mind and want to keep SP-1. Now all those
files for installing SP-2 are still on my computer someplace and I don't
know where. How can I delete them with goofing anything up.?

At this point, Service Pack 2 has not been installed yet. The files have
been downloaded and ready for me to click ok to install. This is where I
changed my mind and want to rid myself of those downloaded files for 2
reasons. One, to save disk space. Two, so I don't accidently click on it to
install.

Remove WU downloads from the temporary folder:-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any
downloaded updates.

Make sure the next time you use Windows Update and it tells you that Windows
XP Sp2 needs to be downloaded, you check the 'Please don't tell me this
again' box so it doesn't keep telling you of the update.

However, keep in mind, nearly everything available today has a pre-requisite
that SP2 is installed. If you install the application anywhere, don't be
surprised if you system starts having problems that you may never be able to
recover from.

You really should put SP2 on. There are so many security updates in SP2. As
has been said most if not all future updates require SP2. Why dont you want
to put SP2 on. Tell us your reasons for not wanting it and we might be able
to help with any problem. If there is no reason then you should put it on.

When SP2 first came along, I did update to it. I don't remember the
particulars at the moment, but I ran into problems with some programs. I
then decided to go back to SP1. You bring up a valid point re future
programs and updates requiring SP2, so I think I'll try it again. My Setup
Wizard is clicking away as we speak so thanks and do appreciate all of your
help.

The most important rule before going to SP2 is that you must be problem
free. The badies are always ahead of the goodies & you need more than
one method of detecting.

Here are a range of free online sites to cleanup your comp. Use at
least 2 from each group.
