Hi,

I have a 40 gig master hard drive and a 120g slave on an emachines T1120. I
am constantly running out of space however and am thinking of upgrading to a
larger drive. There are only 2 slots for hard drives in my machine. Is it
possible to add another slave drive and just put the drive on the bottom of
the computer where it is free of cables and what not? Or will it cause a
lot of damage. I'm really trying to keep the other 2 drives as I have tons
of data and only have a cd-r for backing things up...which would take a lot
of time. Is there any way to install another drive w/o an additional
slot...or am I better off removing one of the drives?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be a little concerned about how many drives are in the case from a
heat perspective, since it doesn't appear to have very good
ventilation. If you REALLY want three drives in THAT case, what I'd
do is use the new drive as a template (the four screw holes
underneath) and drill those 4 holes in the bottom of the case, about
1/8" diameter but you have to be spot-on else you'd need larger holes.
Once you have those four holes, put brass standoffs (as used to attach
many motherboards, should be available at any mom-n-pop computer shop)
threaded into the bottom of the drive, and standard case screws up
though the bottom of the case into the standoffs.

On the other hand, it'd be a whole lot easier to just buy a very large
drive and remove the smaller one... It'll be kinder on the power
supply too... those emachines power supplies aren't known for being
robust or long-lived.

You can buy these plates with lots of holes in them for screws at
Compusa and other places probably. They screw into the sides and hang
below them giving an extra space for more devices like HDs.

Not crazy about emachines myself though I did tell my neighbor to buy
one this time cause the last time outting his sons PC together for
free was way too much of a hassle.

The concern was that in the past maybe now too - emachines had cheesy
power supplies so putting too much many devices on them may or may not
cause problems and on that model I think it came with a 150 watter.

Did you upgrade the PS ? Id go at least 300 watts with at least a
Compusa or some PS that wasnt super duper cheapo. It doesnt have to be
an antec but just dont some really junky PS. The other problem is -
can a standard PS fit in the Emachines case?

I'd suggest you attack the problem a different way.If you are filling
up hard drives why not invest in a CDR/W drive or a DVD R/W drive and
burn data to them so you can free up space on your present hard
drives?Hard drives are not the best storage devices for stuff you
care about.
My 10 penn'th.

A question i have not seen asked is: Are there any more available
drive connectors from teh power supply? If so, are there any 5.25
drive bays open? If so, then you can pick up an adapter set for a 3.5
to 5.25 kit. Some of the larger hard drives also include these when
bought off the shelf at CompUSA and Best Buy. This could offer a far
cheaper solution for your problem. After that, your only problem would
be the 137GB barrier. This would require an IDE expansion card to be
purchased. This would then take up not only more power, but require an
open PCI slot. If none of this is available, then I would suggest you
consider an external USB of Firewire drive to solve the problem, as it
has it's own power supply and connections without even bothering witht
he case you have. Plus, you can simply add more of the USB type with a
hub. Weigh the cost on all of these option first, then decide which
would be easier for you to deal with.

If you have a USB 2 port on the back of the machine you can easily add an
external harddrive. Don't set a harddrive in the bottom of the case; you'll
short out the harddrive's circuit board in all likelihood.
