Somehow my win 98 boot sequence has been destroyed and I
must re-install windows. I will be upgrading to XP when
I do. I can boot DOS with my emergency boot disk but
cannot determine the directory where my outlook mail and
contacts are located. I have a second hard drive to copy
the data to but, so far, have not located the .PST
files. I used the default directory for
outlook (Office 2000 upgraded to Office XP). Any help
with locations using DOS paths to locate outlook.pst
would be appreciated. Are there other files that I
should copy?

The second paragraph at http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm#fileloc
will tell you the default locations for Windows 98. However, .PST files can
be located anywhere if someone moved them.

the easy way to do it is to search for outlook.pst and
then copy it to a safe location prior to updating.

use either the find file utility in windows or even DOS,
using:

DIR outlook.pst /s

A Word of warning, dont cut the file: if you have a
problem during reinstallation or the copy process it could
affect the intergrity of your file: you could lose the
data!

A Second thought, if you have multiple user identities on
your PC you may have one outlook.pst file per identity.

Phil.
