I want to be able to access my Home desktop from my laptop through a VPN .
At Home I have a Wireless Base station (Microsoft MN-500) which is connected
to the Internet through Comcast , the cable modem is a Toshiba.
I had installed the Remote control, VPN etc on both computers (Home desktop
and Laptop).
Now, when I connect the desktop directly to the modem I have one IP address
(IP1) and when the desktop is connectd through the wireless Base station it
has another IP address different that the first one (IP2).
The wireless Base Station has the firewall on.
I checked also the port 3389 and it is listening on my desktop.

Which IP address I need to use to connect them: IP1 or IP2?
I tried IP2 but received the error 800. Do not know what else to do.
Please help.

Thanks

Ask Comcast what the IP address of your home is. It may or may not be
"static," i.e., unchanging. If it changes, you're out of luck.

Also make sure port 3389 can get through all your hardware, especially the
base station and the cable modem.

Thank you so much I will check on that

Bob,
Thank you Very Much. Very helpful link!
I was able to find my IP before but...this re-assure me that it is the rigth
one and that it is a static IP.
I will try again with this IP to see if I am able to connect.
THANS again.

Sonia.

It is not necessarily a static IP.

I tested with the new IP but continues to get error 800: unable to connect
to host...
I checked the port 3389 is listening and open.
How could I ping my home IP from my laptop?
Could be the cause that I have my laptop connected to the internet through a
server hub that is behind a firewall?
Thanks for your help.

I am totally frustrated.
I am traveling Sunday for 10 days and really need to be connected to my Home
desktop.
I tried everything in my knowledge to put in contact the Laptop and the
desktop but nothing, unless I try remote assistance which is not a choice
because there will be nobody at the desktop to accept it.
I disconnect the Wireless Base station (Microsoft MN-500) and connect the
cable directly to the desktop, and using a dial-up connection I was able to
connect to the desktop but not able to access the hard drives information.
And the connection just fall several times during the tests.
All my Hard drives at the desktop (4) are enable sharing.
I even disable all firewalls, but nothing.
When I connected the cable directly to the Desktop and look for the IP
address I found it is a dynamic public IP.
Please somebody could help me with this?
I don't think is a special connection but obviously I am doing something
wrong.
Any help will be very appreciated.

Thank you very much, Bob.
It works, at least for this trip I will be able to control my desktop from
my laptop.
I will work more on this issue when I come back.
Thanks again,

Sonia
