Uncle Vinnie

dumb mistake.. I upgraded my wif'e's PC to a 30g drive from a 10g... the 30g
is a 5400 - the 10g was a 7200..Now I realize I should have picked up a 7200
speed- they're always on sale..

None the less, is there any painless, reliable way to clone the 30g drive
onto a new drive??? I really want to avoid having to re-install
everything... my last attempt on my PC didn't work well- I used Western
Digitals software...

Any advice for a guy who made a dumb mistake in order to save a couple of
bucks?

You can boot to a Dos Boot disk and use the XCOPY command with the following
letters in it:

Xcopy R /I /C /H /K /E /Y (source) (destination)

Thank you Lawrence...
I'm need to ask..after a previous failed attempt.. you've used this before
and it will work??? XP's copyright protection gave me error after error..
none of which turned out to be hardware related at all.. and all I changed
in that system was the drive... (isnt't it supposed to be 3 changes that
causes it to kick in??) Hence, why I'm a little 'shaky' on this one..(I've
done this countless times under DOS, 3.1, 98 and even Me... XP was just a
nightmare)

Again, thank you...

I know what you're trying to do, and I really don't think you can do it with xp. I do believe that you will have to call microsoft tell them what you are doing and they will give you another install key. Probably the best thing to do is to install the OS on the new drive and then copy your files.

Something tells me you might be right...

Sure, easy to do. You can use the software that comes with the drive and
copy the old partition to the new. Or you can use Ghost, True Image, etc.

You can use the XP disk to partition and format the drive and use the above
software to clone the partition you want to use. I have multiple instances
of XP running on different drives on my machine. For instance I have one
drive with XP just for gaming so it has no virus software and minimal
services running. Legal, as it all the same machine. Cloning the drive to
another computer is way illegal.
