Need help converting a column of mixed case text to =PROPER()

I have a spreadsheet with many columns of text all formatted as 'General'.
Text is entered by different people and they are not consistent. Some are
all lower case, some are all upper case and some are entered in the manner I
want, ie, example "Word". The first letter only must be capitaoized with
remainder in lower case. I have played with the function "=PROPER())"
trying to create a simple formula to handle a rather tedious task. Can
anyone out there draw me a picture of how this is done?
