Need help configuring raid

I have a p4c800-e dlx mb to which I've had only a one sata hd connected to
intel sata 1. Tonight I installed a second sata hd connected to sata 2. I
went into the bios and followed the instructions from the manual: onboard
ide operate mode set to enhanced mode, enhanced mode support on set to
s-ata, configure sata as raid set to yes, and serial ata bootrom set to
enable. I clicked f10 and ok. However, it would not load to windows but
instead kept rebooting. Therefore, I went back to the bios and disable the
raid config. I was then able to reboot with no problem. I then thought to
myself, maybe I needed to format the new hd first before configuring raid.
I went into the device mgr to format the drive, rebooted, went into the bios
and repeated the above steps for configuring raid. This time while trying
to boot up I got a message informing to place the boot disk in. I installed
the windows xp disk and after following the steps got a warning the no hard
drives at all were detected. Both HDs also did not show up in the bios.
After numerous tries I could not get the pc to load to windows. Even
disabling raid did not help. I end up having to open up my case and
removing the power and sata connections from my new hd. I was then able to
boot up with no problems.
If it means anything my original hd is a WD raptor 36gb and the new one is a
Maxtor diamond max 10 250gb drive.
I am at a lost for what to do next. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Just to add, I have bios version 1018 if that helps.

A couple of things. First, when you configure a RAID the drives no longer
work independent. The new RAID drive will act like a single drive. It needs
to be partitioned and formated, so needless to say, you will loose
everything on the original drive. Second, you will need a driver for windows
to recognize the RAID drive. Have a look at your manual and the original CD
that came with the board.

Just one more point. I'm not sure how you configured your RAID drive, but if
you stripe (RAID0) or mirror (RAID1), the maximum drive you will get is 36GB
or 72GB (RAID0). You need the same size drives for a RAID configuration.
Otherwise, it uses the smallest drive for the size of the RAID.

To go from a single drive to a RAID configuration you need to completely
reinstall your operating system. In Windows XP (or 2000) you need to press
F6 during the installation when prompted and insert a disk with the RAID
drivers on it. Then format the RAID and finish installing Windows.

Also, you should use two identical drives for the RAID array or it may not
work at all. If it were my machine, I'd pull all the data off to the 250
Gig drive, install a new 36 Gig WD Raptor for the other half of the RAID,
and setup the Maxtor as a slave for storing data (no OS).

If the RAID drives are on the Asus support CD, that may be a problem since I
am having trouble reading from that CD

If the RAID drives are on the Asus support CD, that may be a problem since
I am having trouble reading from that CD

You can download them from the ASUS web site. You'll need to put them on a
floppy anyhow and use F6 when you reinstall windows.
