Need Help configuring 9800 Pro

I recently went from a Nvidia GeForce 4200 TI to an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128
mb card.and took a major hit in frame rate on most games I play(mostly
sports, hockey, football, auto racing, some shooters). My syterm is a P4
2.4 with 1GB PC2700 Ram, Motherboard is a Soyo SY-P4X400 Dragon Ultra. I am
running Windows XP, have all the latest drivers installed, and use EndItAll
before gaming. I'm sure the problem is not the card, but probably in my
Bios or Graphics settings. I am far from an expert at configuring settings,
so I would appreciate any suggestions on ways to improve performance or any
links on where to find info on this,

I just went from a 4400 to a 9800 Pro and everything doubled in speed and
frame rate. Did you remove the Nvidia drivers correctly before installing
the ATI card?
 
Ditto here, when I went from a 4400 to a 9800 Pro.
However, I even went the extra painful step and did a reformat and clean
install of XP Pro when I switched from Nvidia to ATI.
I just wanted to start with a clean slate.

I did a clean install of XP, and still getting poor results. My guess is
that it is somewhere in the BIOS settings. I've tried different settings,
but nothing has seemed to help. My 3dMark 2003 score was about 4200. Any
Bios setttings suggestions? Thanks
 
I did a googel search on bios settings + ATI 9800 Pro

came up with several hits and suggestions.

It seems to me that there is something else wrong and it's not the BIOS. If
your old card worked great with the way you had the BIOS, then so will the
9800Pro. I upgraded from a 4200 also and I didn't have to change anything in
my BIOS. The only setting's in the BIOS that matter AFAIK are the AGP speed
which should be at lest 4x, the AGP aperture which should be 128 MB, and
fast writes, which should be off for the 9800Pro.
Have you checked your cards clock and memory speeds yet? Look for a program
called ATI Tool. It will tell you what your card is clocked at. I'm
wondering if maybe you have a defective card. You should check this out,
just to see is maybe it's clocked slow for some reason. Another problem
could be your power supply. The 9800Pro needs a lot of juice to run right
and maybe your PS is not up to the task. Good luck and let use know how it's

Reseat, or replace your data cables. I think you tweaked
one of them while replacing the card. I've seen that a lot.

Make sure you reinstall any Motherboard Drivers, especially if you have a
VIA chipset. Sounds like what happened to me when I first built the system
I have, AMD64 3200, Asus K8VDeluxe, 9800Pro. I got around 4200 in 3dmark03
until I installed the latest 4in1 drivers. I had to reinstall it a few
times, cause for some reason it didn't take the first couple times. Also,
if that doesn't help, try reinstalling DirectX. Lastly, make sure you
aren't running 3dmark with full AA and AF, cause that's about the score I
get with those on. I know you said you've already reinstalled all the
latest drivers, but like I mentioned before, for some reason for me it
didn't take the first couple times. Hope that helps some.

UPDATE the Motherboard AGP Chipset Drivers for Windows XP.
Had a TI4200 with a problem like this and once I installed the latest
VIA Chipset Drivers the problem was Solved...

Good luck... I too went from a Ti4200 to the 9800Pro... for fun I left
the Nvidia drivers on.... horrible performance, but once removed - it
made the difference (obviously you already took care of that).

I doubt its the 9800 Pro... but I would question the SOYO board, I
worked on one - worse mobo I touched in years (And I dont touch ECS or
Asrocks). Soyo has lots of design issues... they look good, have
awsome feature set.... but reliability isn't there.

I am beginning to think the Soyo board is the problem. I installed a 550w
power supply thinking perhaps my system was a little underpowered, but that
did nothing. I've tried just about everything else, no change.

there used to be a site by a guy who built a system with one as
well... he had pictures of some of the design defects (not
manufacturing) - and myself - the 6-in-1 SOYO packaged card reader
didnt work WITH the Soyo board it came with - but worked perfectly
with an MSI board I had. I also had network issues...

Replaced the board... no problems.

Remember: In the USA - it is illegal to draw or write about Heir Bush in a negative way. The police or SS are called.

15yr old boy in Washington was disciplined for drawing such images.
