Can someone recommend a freeware replacement for Windows Media Player?

BSPlayer is the best I've seen. (And QCD for music.)

I'm curious - why do you not want to use Windows Media Player ?
Compare it to some of the lighter ones and you'll see. Been trying
Ver10 BETA and its horrific. You play a track and its always trying to
sell you something especially now they're integrating it more with
online music shops.

I see. I'm sticking with ver 9

Do you need to get any video codecs, or just BSPlayer? Last I tried
BSPlayer, I needed to have WMP installed so it didn't work for me.

Nnnn ... never've heard of an WMP dependency before. I guess you do need
codecs, but I can't say anything more ...

Sorry, I was speaking from memory of about a year ago so I may be wrong.
For sure I needed something I didn't have, and I didn't want people
trying BSPlayer thinking it, by itself, would solve all their multimedia
needs.

I haven't had video capability in years, but I hear for the streaming
stuff you can get WMP Classic and Real Alternative... and I think
there's even a Quicktime alternative. I think it will always be a "wild
goose chase" as the Corporate types come out with new formats to force
you to use their player.

Now if only more people went towards open source so we wouldn't need to
use bloated proprietary stuff.
