Could be a simple heat issue. Try taking the side of your case off
and letting a large fan blow into it, see what happens.

I had hangs with NFS:U on my 9600pro as well. The screen would stop
rendering, but I could still hear the game going on normally. The only
solution that made the game playable was to play at 800x600 resolution.
Haven't had a freeze since, and it still looks great, but would prefer to
play at a higher resolution myself.

Good luck

Runs fine as on my 9700pro and cat 3.7 drivers. 1024x768, full details and
4x fsaa and ansio. I can run it on 6x and 16x ok, but 4x is enough

I'm running fine on a 9600pro @ 1024x768, 2AA 4AF
Using ATI's Cat 3.7's
512mg pc2100DDR, on a XP 1700+
Med to Hi on settings in game.
Has never crashed.

I would try backing off on the eye candy. Set settings to default or
such, back off on the resolution, run it, if it runs ok then start
turning up candy a little bit at a time till you start having
problems.

Good advice, "Light trails" and "Motion Blur" are by far the most power
hungry effects. Your card should be able to run fine with everything else
maximised but these two and perhaps even with them.

oh and also i did find the problem
i was running 3.7 omega's and i dl'ed ati cat 3.9 and all is well running
board at 600/675 effective
