Need external drive enclosure for SATA drive

I have a perfectly good SATA drive, and want to use it as an external
drive with USB 2.0 and/or FireWire. But I can't find an enclosure that
accepts SATA drives. They all want IDE/PATA drives. Anybody know if
there's a SATA box out there? Thanks.

Doing an Google search for " external SATA enclosure " gives a number
of possibilities.

They exist, but they tend to be tray systems and cost quite a bit more
than simple enclosures for ATA drives. There's a single-bay "Sohotank"
that accepts ATA or SATA drive trays:

SATA enclosures will become more common as SATA displaces ATA, but the
most common connection method will probably be direct SATA rather than a
FireWire or USB bridge.

Those use sata on the cable, not the USB and/or firewire he wants.

My favorite online supplier, newegg.com has several with USB,
USB+Firewire, and other external interfaces for various size drives.

Two for 3.5" drives and USB 2.0 external go for less than $40 (plus
shipping).

My local dealer has this Vantec model:
Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360SU - 3.5in Enclosure / SATA / USB2

We use Wiebe Tech products, primarily we are a professional
outfit. Visit http://www.wiebetech.com/home.php. Nothing wrong
for the home user or amateur getting an outstanding product
from here.

Wiebetech products are, I fully agree, top quality.

However, they are unbelievably overpriced.

I recently purchased (in the UK) an adaptor to recover data from a 1.8"
hard drive. I paid £60-odd for the Wiebetech product, and £22 for a
"generic" brand. I also got an adaptor from eBay (just to test) for £5.

They all did the job as well as each other.

In this case, the Wiebetech product was nothing other than a humongous
rip-off. A PCB with a few connectors and little else.

Haven't used the Vantec Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360SU personally, but Vantec
generally garner good reviews. You could Google the model and learn more.
 
Yee-hah! I found exactly what I needed at CompUSA. Which is weird,
because I went to my local CompUSA looking for a SATA enclosure, only
to be told they didn't have any and didn't know how to get any. I went
to the company website--and there they were. I put in a pickup order,
went to the store, and now I'm all set. It costs just $45, and I've
got an external back up drive. Cool. Thanks much.
