Need download for 2.1 and am so frustrated

I feel like I am in some nether world. Because it looks like I do not have
one of the required dlls

wmmfilt.dll

in my Movie Maker directory (and I love how it is actually given two
versions after you update to SP3 - these being:

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234:Service Pack 3)
Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0

at least on my machine)

I have been trying now for about 2 hours to find a site that will allow me
to download the version of Movie Maker 2.1. Every single site on the web
including CNET and of course ALL of Windows and Microsoft has that download
highlighted and lo and behold you are taken to Windows Update!!!!! I am
infuriated because I am completely updated in Windows Update so there is
nothing that comes up that says I need anything. Then I do a search there for
Movie Maker and it says it has no result.

It is crazy!!! I feel like Microsoft is trying to get us only to install
Vista because it is insane to have so accessible the Movie Maker 2.6 download
available but no place is the 2.1 download available! I guess now I will try
to find just this one dll.

I am looking for it because of Movie Maker's problem of saying "Class not
registered" on just attempting to get it to import any video file like a
*.avi or a *.wmv file. Actually it says it practically concerning everything.
And I copied a batch file that has worked for that problem from the Movie
Maker site and I opened it up and it has that *.dll listed as one of the
movie maker dlls. I do not even have it on my machine! Plus of course I have
both of the codec packages to reinstall over their old installs hoping that
perhaps this is a codec problem. But for now I think I should try and get
this missing *.dll file.

Please help!

Since Win XP SP2...Movie Maker was and still is
version 2.1...the 5.1 reference is your Windows Version.

There is no individual download for Movie Maker 2.1...
however it is included in SP2 and SP3.

I'm not offering the following links as *the* fix but
maybe they will offer some ideas:

Movie Maker 2.1 Installation

Movie Maker 2 -

or 80040154 error

or...

Just a thought...have you installed WinAVI?

And the following link may be worth a look:

Movie Maker always has to close

or...
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.moviemaker/msg/ae88267a9e023836

Here's a link to a Google search that may
offer something useful:

"class not registered"
http://tinyurl.com/2v379o
or...
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...windowsxp.moviemaker&q="class+not+registered"

Also might be worth a try to:

1. Install/reinstall Windows Media Encoder 9
2. Update Video drivers.

No guarantees...but it might be worth
a try to run the following command.

Go to...Start / Run...and type (or copy / paste)
the following...

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qdv.dll
(yes, there's a space between the first 2 and %)

Press Enter.

You should see a dialog that says:

DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\qdv.dll succeeded

Good Luck.....

Wow! what a response! And so prompt! Thank you ... gosh I don't know .. well
I now have to try all of your steps. But it is amazing that I got back here
... the link in the email seemed corrupted because my machine would not take
me back. And also in the meantime I had the nightmare of downloading the last
Windows Update and lo and behold ... it was more of that abominable Net
Framework which put my computer out of commission for about 6 months last
year when I was stupid enough to uninstall it and then had to download SP3
and without the Net Framework none of us could get SP3 to install. But we did
not know that I had uninstalled Net Framework and that it would corrupt
(perhaps that is not the right word .. how about f___k up) the install of
SP3. So anyway the update this week of 1.1 service pack put my computer on
the blitz again in that it did not register or take. And I am quite proud of
myself for having gone and downloaded these 3 components (the patch, the
whole caboodle of net framework and the service pack alone) and played with
them until finally the update took.

So J. Inzer you are a doll for responding with so much information. I have
to get offline and do a install of automovie and digital library and
silverlight and ... starting to realize I don't need any of this. I am just
filling my computer up. I think I will try your generous submittal of time in
providing me a variety of answers and I am very appreciative for the answers.
And your time. Thank you very much.
