Need "desperate" help with file transfer!!

Hi everyone,

Am needed alot of help as am not very good at computers and need this
problem resolving in the next few days!! i bought a new laptop yesterday and
when with the guy i asked how i could transfer my files, the guy showed me
the belkin "easy transfer cable" and oh did he make it sound sooooo easy!!!
My old computer has Windows xp ..... and my new one has vista.

So i got home, and opened the box and released that there was a little disk
for the software, unfortunatly my cd drive is broken on my dell laptop, but
theres a sheet saying you can also download the software from the website.
And you need to do it on your old pc .... ie. The one with Xp on. I did this
and it said it has been succesful. Everything ok so far .....

But then i started hitting problems, as soon as i plugged the USB cable in
my new computer it registered that it was transfer cable .... but then i
plugged the other end into my computer with XP ... and it just doesnt
register it at all!!!! It says its new hardware!!??? Iv tried 3 times now
taking the software off and reinstalling it and then doing again but its no
good, and then iv tried downloading the software onto my new computer too
(even though it registers fine on there) just to see if that will work.

Iv tried every different USB port too .... Its just not doing it at
all?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Help pleeeaaasssseeee!! This is doing my head in!!

If you're in a hurry, the best thing to do is take both computers to
the store where you bought the new one and have them show you how to
do it. The sales guy won't mind if it's as easy as he says :o)
 
hi, read your problem..i just got a new dell pc, windows vista, my old oc is
windows me, i just bought the easy transfer cable, thinking it would be
sooooo easy also. but before i opened it, on the package it says for xp to
vista.so maybe that could be the problem...i think i will need to just do the
easy transfer, using network.not sure.waiting for someone to answer.just
thought i'd let u know..you may be having the problem i may have.not sure.

Referring to "...and it just doesnt register it at all!!!! It says its new
hardware!!??? .." - this is exactly what XP will state - the fact that you
see the message indicates XP is aware of it.

In continuing - XP will follow that up with loading drivers if necessary or
you are asked to install drivers/software. ("little disk").

Get a cup of coffeee - RTFM (Read the friendly manual) - check Vista "Help
and Support" by typing "File Transfer".
