I have an Athlon 1.2 and it's REALLY holding my 9700 Pro back. I still get
shitty framerates. Where is the best, cheapest place to get CPU's?

Given that you've got an Athlon at the moment, you're motherboard is likely
to be a Socket A (more specifically it is a Socket A!). Depends on what one
it is, but some of them can run Athlon XP's and Barton - you might just need
to update the BIOS. Other older motherboards won't support the AXP /
Barton, so you'd need a new one. Go for a XP2500+ (Barton) or faster -
around £60 GBP.

Bear in mind that a locked Barton 2500+ would run at 1.46GHz on 133MHz FSB
and only 1.1GHz on 100MHz FSB.

Which MoBo you have. What speed is your FSB? Makes all the difference.

Gotta go,
Magwheelz

anthor option if you really don;t want to change your mother board is the
2800 MP it is 266 FSB but barton.
however the bus is probably what is causing the frame rate drops

iWill KA266 mobo, 512 DDR. it's old and doesn't accept more than 1.2 ghz
athlon. i need a new mobo too along with the CPU

It'll work with Palomino cored athlon xp's if you can find one, but I've
tried my KA266-R with Thoroughbred A's and B's and neither post.

Without a doubt, one of the best, if not the best place to buy computer
hardware and software is Newegg.com. Their prices may not be rock bottom,
but the service and customer support is TOP NOTCH! I just ordered an AMD
2500+ Barton in a retail pack with fan and heatsink for $91. Fedex shipping
was free and it got here in 3 days. I have bought a lot of items from them
and have never been worried.

Get either a Abit NF7-S and a barton 2500+ and 512mb of PC3500 ram and a
SLK947 + 92mm fan and set it to 11x200 or 11x210 (cost about $240, or get a
SiS-based Athlon64 mobo + A64-3200+, about $500. You'll also need a 400w+
powersupply for either of these.

AMD2500 - $100 - retail version with fan... if your board supports
it... if not, try a 2400 or 2600.

FWIW, Newegg has Athlon 64 3000+ for a little over $200. At that price
it would be the way to go IMO.
